“We have no idea why Cream is the way she is. Meeting her (and if you spend more than 5 minutes hanging out in the cow herd you almost certainly will) you would think she was a bottle calf by how bold and comfortable she is around people. She’ll march right up to you and demand you scratch her whole body. If you’re fixing fence near her she’ll all but swallow your fencing pliers trying to be involved. The first time we really noticed her we were out doctoring weaned calves that had come down with a little pneumonia after a big temperature swing, and she just walked right up to me and my horse, like it had occurred to her that she had an itch somewhere she couldn’t scratch, and I looked like just the guy to fix that for her. She made herself pretty hard not to notice after that. When it came time to sort out the heifers we were going to retain as replacements that year, as usual I was mostly looking at body condition, frame, and maturity to pick out our top-end heifers. Cream came down the alley, by no means the biggest or best looking of the bunch, but we had to keep her. She’s what I’d call a personality-hire. The cream of the crop.”
Mike (@mikegio93) on one of the most stand out personalities on the Frying Pan Ranch, a yearling heifer he calls “Cream.” #CowsofRanchlands

If you join us as a guest for a Ranch Vacation this upcoming season, you’ll ride out to the Red Wall.
Riding through sagebrush flats and into deep arroyos, the landscape begins to shift as you move beyond the ranch and onto surrounding public land. Along the way, you may catch sight of massive elk herds moving through the area, depending on the season.
The tan, orange and burgundy sandstone hills give way to the large Chugwater formation known as the Red Wall — a commanding presence that invites you to pause and take in the vast ecological history around you.
Come join us at the ranch this year and experience the Red Wall for yourself.

In our book, an ideal summer day is one where you end it saddle-tired, with a refreshing dip in the creek, ready for dinner, maybe a drink around the campfire, then to bed with the sun, ready to wake up tomorrow and do it all over again.

We’re drawn to horses for lots of reasons, and only some of them have to do with the experiences we can have when we’re on their backs. Horses can also be great spiritual and emotional teachers when we spend time with them on the ground, helping to bring us into the present moment, which is why they are so frequently incorporated into therapy.
Horses communicate largely non-verbally, so we must do the same in our interactions with them through the energy we bring, both on the ground and when riding. They ask us to cultivate greater awareness of our presence, which can be easy to neglect in a culture that tends to intellectualize and abstract. Horses help keep us honest by offering connection when we are present in our bodies and disconnecting with us when we are stuck in our minds. In these moments of connection, we can feel fully alive.
During a workshop this summer at the Paintrock, Kelly Dukarski of @awildomen will be exploring the practice of relating to horses energetically through equine gestalt, and the wellbeing it can provide. You’ll learn more about how horses can teach us to regulate our nervous systems by mirroring where we are holding unprocessed emotions or pain, both in the saddle and at liberty.

We’re down to just one remaining spot in our foundations of horsemanship clinic with the incomparable Cam Schryver (@cam_schryver_riding_lessons)!
Cam is a two-time World Champion Extreme Cowboy who’s just as talented a teacher as he is a horseman. For many years, he oversaw the horseback riding program at the Thacher School, and the patience and empathy he developed during his career working with high school students is clearly on display during his clinics. He breaks down the complexities of horsemanship into digestible pieces that his students can grasp no matter how far along they are on their horseback riding journey, creates a supportive group learning environment, and is deeply passionate about improving our communication with horses to make riding more enjoyable for both horse and rider.
Plus, this isn’t a clinic that takes place in an arena. You’ll ride out across the ranch, using the landscape as your classroom, with exercises that are, importantly, lots of FUN!
Learn more about this week and snag the last spot at the link in bio.
And for more advanced riders, we still have a handful of spots available in Cam’s second week, a stockmanship clinic.

And for more advanced riders, we still have a handful of spots available in Cam’s second week, a stockmanship clinic.

“I pulled into this water lot to patch a hole in the drinker and couldn't help but dig for the camera when I saw one of my favorite cows lined up under the windmill like she was wearing it as a hat. Number 1 — as we call her — is a standout character in the Beefmaster herd, partly because of her towering frame that makes her stick out physically, but also because she has kind eyes and a sweet dopey personality to match. A perfect gentle giant. Her #1 ear tag could not be more fitting.”
