anthurium nd a mini fro 𓇢𓆸

i’ve been thinking lately as i had cut my locs last winter about the connection i had with my hair, my kinky hair to be specific. the real wakening for me came through the natural movement around 2016. it was about freedom but also understanding what your hair truly needed, not what society wanted it to look like: in one word straight. as a black girl it felt so freeing seeing black women at the same time sharing their thoughts and talking about who we truly are, not what we should look like. but the movement turned into a competition. the hair needed to be long and have defined curls. long routines for me to make 4c hair less “kinky”. all the routines were about keeping length.

all this remembering reminded me how being a black woman and navigating beauty standards is difficult. even our liberation is tinted by the fact that the world does not want us to look like ourselves.

multiple times in my life people told me i did not have hair on my head when my hair was even longer than now.
so yes unfortunately, i tried so much to define my curls, to keep my length, because i wanted to prove to these people that i had hair and reaaaallyyyy long beautiful hair. but in that i never really cared for my hair, only how people were viewing them.
today now i know i dont even like having long hair.

so i decided to draw a mini fro today, maybe inspire someone to share this journey with me.

i got my hair braided and found inspiration again.

i think it’s been less than a year since i posted something anywhere. to be completely honest, i didn’t have the will to draw. it’s not that i didn’t have any ideas for drawings, but each of them no longer felt in sync with me. i needed to see something new, so i searched for something to feed myself creatively. probably in the coming days, you won’t see much change in what i do; likely because i feel that i’ve found a good foundation for what you can call an “art style”. but still, all these little changes took me a year to reach this point. i’m very glad to share it with you at this time of the year, as i don’t wish to give you more quantity of work with less soul.

the drawing is inspired by the cover of fifteen years of heartache and aggravation by push pin studios

finally!! hair style expressions pt. 2 ✴️
it took some time because i wanted to choose hairstyles that fit the concept, but also didn’t look like the first part.

the concept is still to match black hairstyles with expressions or emotions. (tell me if i succeeded)

🥥 i'm a bit surprised, i didn’t realize how much my style changed in just four months. i think my lineart feels more confident, and my coloring is a bit “warmer”.

there’s always a reason behind why i change my art style, but this one leans more into warmer tones, something confortable and appeasing. i really wanted to challenge the way i see things that felt common to me, and look at them from a new perspective. (like black hairstyles)
sometimes, to evolve, you don’t need to step out of your comfort zone, you need to lean into it and explore how to make it feel new. 🤎

i watched the wicked recently and it’s send me to all lore of the wicked the musical, the book. but also the wizar of oz (the movie and the books). ending by watching the wiz. i especially was so impressed when i saw the wiz, it’s definitely my favorite movies of the 3. i was literally in awe with the custom design, the music, the scenery, the message of the movie…
and it’s definitely more close to my heart as depicted so well the portrait of socially awkward black woman feeling lost in her twenties.
i also wanted to dive more into children book style. i feel i’m not quite here on the graphic style. but i’m still going to search my way trough it. i wish to do a children book some days, it’s really been a dream for me since highchool.
hope you like the drwings created from this year hyperfixation 🤎

the governor, the bandit, the merchant

im sorry im so late to this, everybody already made a drawing about the met gala this year. i think it’s my favorite met gala since a long time ago (probably because a majority of the people attending care to be on theme).
the idea of the drawing was from a way back when i read an interview with ayo edeberi about how a stylist dressed her specifically to look like a first lady. i thought it was an interesting artistic directing move to go for an incoming actress. i envision a team of 3 figures who run a fictional city, with all the corrupt politicians, rapacious merchants and merciless bandits.
