The universe stuttered and fell silent with the passing of Ustad Zakir Hussain today.

For decades, his hands conjured rhythms that seemed to emerge from some elemental place. As a student of music, you realize that his genius operates on a plane so expansive that you must evolve yourself to even begin to grasp it. I know I am still far from understanding the full breadth of what he created.

Working with him on Monkey Man was an extraordinary privilege, not just for his music but for the man himself. During the two weeks we spent quarantining before the shoot, he regaled us with anecdotes that weren’t merely stories—they carried layers of wisdom.
