Pure Rave
Collective abstract turntablism unit. Operatives in Detroit, LA, Hamburg, Perth, and more?? Always looking for new members.

The Pure Rave rig is live until September 20th! We strongly recommend spending about an hour exploring the techniques and understanding the looping/mixing/recording set up. The Gallery is open Wednesday and Thursday 12-5, Fri 12-7, Sat 12-5.
We also encourage you to bring your own records, USB sticks, and recording devices if you’d like to make your own tracks. We’re always looking for new members to join the collective! We want you to perform as Pure Rave wherever you are.
We are also down to make plans to meet you at the rig for a personal lesson! Especially if you love abstract music and want to perform more often.
We’d like to extend our deepest gratitude to the following for helping bring this exhibition to life:

💿 Pure Rave, a collective based in Detroit, Michigan, is an ongoing experiment in “chance dance”. Using various prepared turntables, “damaged” records, the occasional drum machine, rudimentary CDDJ loops, and 133.33 bpm loops. The effect is an indeterminate arrangement of patterns and rhythmic sonic collage. Real-time experimentation with the goal of hitting your pleasure center for whatever your brain thinks is interesting.
🔊 Set amidst the context of contemporary Detroit electronic music, the group has no trouble finding endless bins of trashed Midwestern dance records and no problem hosing them off in the front yard of their apartment building. Cheap or free turntables of questionable condition are also bountiful in this town.
💡 Expanding on turntablism techniques developed by experimentalists Christian Marclay, Grandmaster Flash, Pierre Schaeffer, Otomo Yoshihide, Maria Chavez, Qbert, Graham Dunning, Institut Fuer Feinmotorik, Victoria Shen, Emil Beaulieau, Ironing, and anyone who’s ever enjoyed what happens when their record starts skipping, core members Nick George, Bryan Dulaney, Will Lawson and Cy Tulip approach the Pure Rave project as a set of rules and limitations for an inaccessible academic experimental music scene and vapid modern DJ culture. In Fluxus-like fashion, the result is often humorous.
📍Pure Rave’s interactive sound installation is open for all to come and experiment at as part of the multimedia exhibition, Those Who Keep Strange Hours, on view at the Elaine L. Jacob Gallery through September 20, 2025!
🕰️ Gallery Hours: Wednesday 12-5PM, Thursday 12-5PM, Friday 12-7PM, Saturday 12-5PM

📆 Join us for an upcoming workshop at the Elaine L. Jacob Gallery: Material, Resource and Memories: Vinyl as a Map
🔊This workshop will gather around our current multimedia exhibition, Those Who Keep Strange Hours, and will use Pure Rave’s interactive sound installation as the starting point and source of inspiration.
💭 Dwelling on the notion of strange within the familiar (Mark Fisher, cultural theorist), the workshop invites you to activate, share and think with us. Come play with the installation and reflect, think, draw, write about vinyl as a portal to your memories (false or correct).
🤝 This workshop is hosted by FILTER Detroit in collaboration with Pure Rave and Thomas Baldischwyler
📍Mark Your Calendars: July 30, 3pm at the Elaine L. Jacob Gallery
