Inside Teddy’s Basement in Bugonia: Designing a house of chaos -basement and all

Unlike Michelle’s immaculate, real-world home, Teddy’s (Jesse Plemons) house was built from scratch, basement and all. Every room, every awkward corner, every claustrophobic detail was designed to feel stalled in time.

In this clip from our latest Film and Furniture Podcast episode, production designer @jamesroberternestprice talks about the challenges of creating a house that feels genuinely lived-in without tipping into caricature. The basement was key. Dark, compressed and purpose-built, somewhere obsession can grow unchecked. Designing it as part of the same structure, rather than an add-on, helped the house feel whole… and inescapable.

Mid way through the movie Teddy shows Don an animation of what he thinks the Andromeda spaceship would look like. This is something that Teddy is supposed to have done himself on his laptop. Antonio model the Spaceship and created the animation in blender which was then put on an old laptop by Psytex. The scene was shot for real outside Teddy’s house. Really happy that we were able to create this animation in the art department and capture it all

Building Teddy’s world. The house Teddy that lives in, we built form scratch outside Henley-on-themes Oxfordshire uk.

This time-lapse shows the construction and dressing of Teddy’s house. Unfortunately we lost the first couple of weeks footage of dinging the basement and erecting steel frame.

Building Teddy’s world. The house Teddy that lives in, we built form scratch outside Henley-on-themes Oxfordshire uk. Years before the village in #Timburtons #sleepyhollow had be built on that same estate.
Initially the idea was to build the exterior and interior there so the set became a real living breathing environment for the story to play out. But the basement would be built more traditionally on a stage at a studio. That was until on one scout Yorgos suggest we build the basement underneath the rest of the house for real. The following images are of the finished house. Some of the build in progress a couple of Antonio’s concept and my first scribble after reading the script initially.
