🇵🇸 “Songs of Hope for Gaza” comp out now🕊️
🗽Little Wings “Live in New York” LPs coming soon!

“I Love You Forever,” the new album by @jacobaugustinemusic is out in the world today, via the good people at @team_love_records.
This one’s heavy. Ten years of work, of blood, sweat, and tears, of hair gone grayer, of life lived, of friends and family loved and lost, of a world gone wrong… It’s all there from the opening moments of the first song. I think you’ll feel it. I know I do.
We’ll be playing “I Love You Forever” back to front, with many of the musicians who made it, once and only once! This coming Saturday, May 30th at @space538 alongside @_littleoso and @pearlasongs.
Secure your spot and your LP at the link in bio.

Peter McLaughlin of the Maine Music Alliance breaks down the amazing experience provided by America’s favorite concert promoter! Psych.
For Episode 17, Peter and co-organizer Scott Mohler explain how local musicians in Portland, Maine successfully stopped Live Nation from opening a 3300-cap venue in their town. It is a truly inspiring story involving musicians organizing to save local spaces during the COVID-19 lockdown, and eventually turning that network out in massive numbers—building a broad coalition, showing up to city council meetings, and convincing local government to modify city building codes that ultimately stopped the development. “It was a good day for the little guys,” they told us. Peter and Scott get into the weeds with us to explain how and why it all went down, and advice for other artists who want to organize against Live Nation in their towns.
Learn more about their org at mainemusicalliance.com. And if you enjoy this episode please consider becoming a subscriber at Patreon.com/criticallistening so we can keep interviewing artist-organizers about pushing back against corporate power in music!

Happy May Day from the newly formed SPACE Union 🌹
Today seemed like a good day to let it fly that the @space538 staff filed to join UAW 2110 on February 27th and received voluntary recognition shortly thereafter. This was a collective decision made with unanimous approval from all 21 staff.
I’ve somehow worked at SPACE more than 15 years, effectively my entire adult life. The experiences I’ve had and relationships I’ve formed in that building have defined who I am today. My time here has been a truly wild ride, full of high highs and low lows. The enormity of it all is difficult to put into words, but I can say with great certainty, I’ve never been prouder to work at SPACE than I am today.
Big love and solidarity to all my coworkers, who have brought so much heart and commitment to this process. A massive shoutout to our neighbors in the @mainepmaunion, who inspired our earliest organizing efforts. We’re thrilled to be joining them and all the UAW 2110 workplaces: Mass MoCA, the MFA, the MOMA, the Met, BAM, the Guggenheim, The Shed, Film Forum, and many others. A major final thank you to the staff at UAW 2110, who have been hugely supportive (and exceedingly patient) through the many fits and starts of this organizing campaign.
You, too, can do this. It may not be easy, but it will be worth it. Don’t quit. Organize. The future is brighter in a union.

For the past year, the six of us at @maine.music.alliance have fought to protect Portland’s independent music scene. This week, we became the first city in the country to stop Live Nation, whose proposed venue would have threatened our local music economy.
Being worth $40B doesn’t grant a company free rein to steamroll a city into doing whatever it wants. We proved that a community can defend itself, no matter the size of the threat.
We believe in independence, and we’ll keep fighting for the musicians, venues, and promoters who make this scene what it is, in Portland and beyond. Huge thanks to @thepennyarcade and @prettypurgatory for leading the charge, and to @dan_melnick, @lkwayne, and @coldatlantic for fighting the good fight.

Just over a decade ago, @jacobaugustinemusic, @hamiltonbelk, @asherplatts, and I posted up in a vacant house at the end of a narrow peninsula in Harpswell, Maine for a week. The owner of the house had died a few weeks earlier. He had no next of kin, no close family, so the house remained untouched, fully lived in and containing a lifetime of belongings, like a museum dedicated to a person we did not actually know. The house was left to a neighbor, who we did know, and allowed us to turn the place into our short term studio. The songs we recorded would be imbued with qualities of that old house, the ocean that nearly surrounded the property, the woods, the rocks, and certainly the peculiar man who made his home there for decades. We probably should’ve given him production credit.
Once we left Harpswell, we could never quite finish the album. I sometimes felt like we needed to go back to Harpswell and give it another couple weeks. But something kept drawing us back into this music. Their lyrics and message just grew in relevance by the year. Thankfully, due to the incessant urging and immense support from friends, we managed to find our way to the finish line. For that, we must thank Peter Broderick (who orchestrated four of the record’s tracks in resplendent grandeur), @noahmcole (who beautifully mixed the record in a way we could not even begin to approach), and Nate Krenkel and Autumn Seguin (who believed in these songs and provided the vision for getting them into the world).
Good songs are timeless and Jacob has had a knack of writing quite a few of those over the years. Grateful for the old to be made new, and for this music to get out of our heads (and hard drives) and into your ears.
Today, you can hear “Midnight Drum,” the first single from “I Love You Forever,” due out in full on May 22nd via @team_love_records. Much more to come.

I’m very proud to say Songs of Hope for Gaza has raised nearly $3,000 for @aneraorg’s critical aid work in Palestine and beyond. Two months into a “ceasefire” that has seen innocent lives taken every day, I think we all know this is needed and so, so much more.
If you haven’t purchased the compilation yet, today is a great day to do that. It’s Bandcamp Friday, so 100% of your purchases go directly to musicians and labels, and in our case, directly to ANERA.
33 original songs, all written in and for this moment, available to you for a donation of any size at the link in bio.
The response to this benefit album has been seriously inspiring. I’m deeply honored to have gotten to work with @li_z_a_victoria and @dearliferecs on this project and in awe of all the musicians who rose to the immense challenge of trying to write something meaningful in the face of the daily horrors of genocide. I’m grateful to be in community with every one of you. It’s a community we need more than ever. Let’s keep leaning on each other and fighting for a better world.

Serious gratitude to @jacobinmag and @laneve__ for this full feature on our David and Goliath story up here in Portland, Maine. They got it exactly right; what we’re building right now is much bigger than just our local scene. Join us at @maine.music.alliance. A donation of any amount helps if you can, but people power is worth its weight in gold. Much more to come and soon.

Announcing “Songs of Hope for Gaza,” a 33-song compilation of original music written for this moment, in solidarity with the people of Palestine. Co-released by @dearliferecs and @prettypurgatory, and curated by @lisaliza_songs, 100% of proceeds will go to ANERA, to support humanitarian aid and emergency relief in Gaza and beyond.
These are songs of hope and songs of protest, which so beautifully expose the full range of complex emotions many people of conscience feel right now, as we watch an unfolding genocide worsen by the day. Silence, inaction, and hopelessness are not the answer, and not an option. So across borders and scenes, we unite as a music community to use our art as a collective voice with resolute hope.
Featuring music by @littlemazarn, @tashidorjiiii, @thanyaiyer, @tinyduststar, @jacobaugustinemusic, @ladyqueenparadise, @adeline.hotel, and many more. Album art by @sludgedream. Mastered by @hamiltonbelk.
Listen to a preview on Bandcamp and pre-order the full album for any amount you can give. The full compilation will be released on October 28th.
Thank you for your support. We will keep dreaming and fighting together for a better world and a free Palestine.

Got to hang with the most interesting man in the history of American music last night. From producing classic soul for Atlantic Records, to ghost-writing chart topping hits, to anti-war activities that landed him on Nixon’s “Enemies List,” to managing a young Dr. Dre, to being covered by Jimmy Cliff, Santana, Johnny Paycheck, Yo La Tengo, and The Isley Brothers, there is only one Swamp Dogg, the original D-O-double-G!
Truly one of the greatest concerts I’ve seen in my 37 years on planet earth. Thank you, @theswampdogg!
