From the very beginning we’ve been asked what we planned to do with the cracks in the asphalt at Prairie with Nine Rooms. The whole time, our answer has been: keep them, as long as the site remains accessible. We didn’t mind the chickweed, daisy fleabane, and carolina crane’s-bill drawing lines of green across the site. One year after planting, we’re excited by what else is pushing up in cracks old and new. In order of appearance: foxglove beardtongue (Penstemon digitalis), virginia mountain mint (Pycnanthemum virginianum), showy milkweed (Asclepias speciosa), anise hyssop (Agastache foeniculum).

Winter 2026 was a tough one in Columbus—new daily snowfall records in January, sub-zero temperatures, weeks below freezing—so we didn’t have much hope for the asphalt planters at Prairie with Nine Rooms… but plants have a way of surprising you. 🌱

Here, the first of two asphalt planters at Prairie with Nine Rooms on OSU's north campus. The asphalt was removed during site construction and saved for this experimental application. The plant species are disturbance adapted, drought tolerant, heat tolerant, and prefer a (very) well-drained site. We're also looking forward to seeing what shows up. // We didn't move all of this asphalt on our own—we had the amazing (👏) help of Ethan McGory @emgardendesign and his @knowltonlandscape seminar students. Thank you thank you!

Yesterday at daybreak we moved the first four yakisugi logs from our atelier behind the railroad tracks to A Prairie with Nine Rooms, our new landscape on OSU's north campus. The pieces weigh hundreds (and hundreds) of pounds, so each one is wrapped in heavy blankets and lifted into place by a forklift with a telescoping boom. // A huge (!) thanks to Jeff and the rest of the OSU crew for the creativity and care they brought to the operation.
