Today marks 6 years since George Floyd and Dion Johnson were murdered by police on May 25th, 2020. 6 years since people across the country flooded the streets demanding accountability, demanding justice, demanding a world where Black people are allowed to exist without constantly being targeted by the state.

And this year, this date falls alongside Memorial Day weekend. A holiday that’s that claims to be about remembrance and honoring the dead, but one this country has turned into pool parties, alcohol sales, barbecues, and pretending everything is okay while families are still grieving loved ones stolen by state violence.

Police are the military of the state. They exist to protect power, property, and systems built on control, punishment, and violence. George and Dion’s murders were not an accident. They were the result of a system operating exactly how it was designed to function against Black people and marginalized communities.

Today we should be asking ourselves what it means to “honor the fallen” while continuing to fund and defend the very systems killing our people in the streets, jails, prisons, and across our communities every single day.

George Floyd. Dion Johnson. And the countless names people stopped posting about once the hashtags stopped trending.

For us, remembrance has to mean more than performative statements and temporary outrage. It has to mean organizing to protect each other. Building a world where cages, policing, surveillance, and state violence no longer determine who gets to survive.

6 years later and we’re still carrying them with us. Still grieving. Still angry. Still organizing.

May we never become numb to this violence. May we never stop fighting for each other.

The mayor asked us to be brief … so let’s be clear on how #District7 voted on the #CityOfPhoenix 2026-2027 budget:

A budget is a moral document. It reflects who we value, and who we don’t.

District 7 voted ‘yes’ on the 2026-2027 budget because community showed up and won. Increased funding for housing, childcare, food access, and youth programs. The community did that. 👏🏽

But let’s also be honest. Police received an additional $51M, bringing their share of the taxpayer-funded general fund to over $850M. Teen programs are public safety. Literacy hubs are public safety. Affordable housing is public safety. Heat relief is public safety. Urban greenways and bike corridors are public safety. Another police increase? That’s not public safety. That’s a choice.

We won’t stop pushing for a Phoenix that prioritizes community over criminalization. Stay with us: the 2027-2028 budget fight starts now. 🌹

Incredible win for community last night at the City Of Phoenix Budget meeting ❗️ With a 9-0 vote we won historic funding for Phoenix residents.
