For this session, you’ll need a pen, something to write on and a copy of a play that you love. This week’s video is just under 25 minutes in length and it’ll take you about an hour to watch it and complete the exercises. There’ll be some reading and some writing involved.
The Play for May workshops will be available all month on our website. Sign up via the link in our bio to watch the videos, access to our Friday online writing sprints, and get writing.

Associate Playwright Davey Anderson will guide you through an exercise designed to get you thinking about the place in which your play lives and how it affects the story and characters. You’ll be asked to bring back your homework from week one which was to write the first draft of one scene with a playable action as a starting place.
The video is just under 15 minutes long and the workshop will take 30-45 minutes to complete in two locations. You’ll also need some paper and a pen.
The workshop will be available all month on our website. You can still sign up for Play for May in the link in our bio to get the link for the videos, access to our Friday online writing sprints, and to stay connected to the project.

This election day, we’re sharing a couple of key figures from our survey of Scotland’s playwrights.
The first national survey of Scotland’s playwrights in five years shows that the average income from playwriting for our professional writers is £6001 per year. Whilst commissioning rates have increased, creative earnings have stagnated: 30% of professional writers who responded to the survey received no income from commissions in the last financial year.
Investment in artists and their livelihoods is vital for Scotland and its communities. We support calls for a consultation on a Basic Income for Artists to support artists to deliver the art Scotland’s people deserve.
We’ll be sharing a fuller analysis of the survey’s results next month.

Our first video for Play for May is up! Today’s topic is turning ideas into actions.
Associate Playwright Davey Anderson takes you through a guided exercise to get the characters, story, time and action of a new piece of writing. The video is 23 minutes long and the workshop will take 45 minutes to an hour to complete.
The workshop will be available all month on our website. Sign up for Play for May in the link in our bio to get the link for the videos, access to our Friday online writing sprints, and to stay connected to the project.

Creating Space: Working in Collaboration
Friday 8th May 2026
4pm - 6pm
Summerhall Arts Centre, Anatomy Lecture Theatre
FREE
Collaboration sits at the heart of great stories, yet finding the right creative partners, building trust, and navigating the bumps along the way isn’t always straightforward. This event brings directors, writers and producers together to explore how meaningful, sustainable creative relationships are built.
Across a one‑hour panel discussion and a 30‑minute Q&A, we’ll dig into the questions that shape collaborative practice:
-How do you make connections with other artists working in the sector? Where do you meet people?
-What models of collaboration work best?
-What are the ‘rules’ of collaboration? What do you do if it ‘goes wrong?’
-How do you know which collaborator is best for you?
From 5.30pm, join us for a relaxed mixer to continue the conversation and create space for future partnerships.
The discussion will be facilitated by Emma McKee (Executive Producer, Playwrights’ Studio, Scotland) with Annie George, Becky Hope-Palmer and Stephanie Hunter.

2025/26 Playwrights’ Survey
Deadline: 5pm, Wednesday 29th April 2026.
Playwrights of Scotland, your voice matters now more than ever.
As Scotland heads towards an election, having accurate data on what you earn, the work you create and who it reaches is essential. We'll use these figures in our advocacy work, so the more playwrights who complete the survey, the stronger a case we can make to politicians and beyond.
The 2025/26 Playwrights’ Survey is our chance to show what playwrights need, what pressures you’re facing and what support is essential for Scotland’s creative future.
We’re asking about:
-Plays, productions and commissions
-Professional development needs and opportunities
-Playwriting as a source of income
-Those working within the sector in Scotland.
Your experiences help us advocate for meaningful change.
