Honor our veterans this Memorial Day with "On Location with the Laureate" [Youtube Link below] 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 Join us at a Quilts of Valor ceremony at the Port Matilda American Legion as they cover veterans with quilts of appreciation and healing for their service. Meet Commander Chris Brugger of the Wilson Patton Post 536, four generations of the Moore family who served, and Krista Florent Gilday, also a multi-generation veteran in her family (and a direct descendant of New Hampshire Congressman Josiah Bartlett, and a signatory of the Declaration of Independence!). Krista is the Group Leader of the Quilts of Valor of Central Pennsylvania in Philipsburg PA, whose mission is to cover every service member in a quilt of comfort. The local chapter of volunteers who create these quilts currently has 13 group members of all ages and skills. Honored at this May 2026 ceremony were PFC Dakota Moore, Sgt. James Verost, Sgt. Caleb Lee Biser (quilt made for him by his daughter, Roselena), Chief Petty Officer, Steven Moore (also former White House chef), Sgt. Christopher Brugger, Corporal Oscar Moore (who also happened to be post commander of the Port Matilda American Legion in 1956). Thank you to our veterans for their service to our country.
Want to nominate a Veteran online to be covered in a quilt? Click on www.qovf.org to nominate a Veteran online, and if the nomination is local to Central Pennsylvania, please place group #106015 on the application
Quilts of Valor is a not for profit organization and all donations are appreciated to continue to create the quilts. Go to QOVF.org, click on "Make a Donation," scroll to "Donate to a Local Group," Click on "Find a Group," Enter 106015... and thank you!

Let’s take a trip to Penn State’s Greater Allegheny (formerly known as McKeesport) Campus! Meet a former Penn State Laureate, Lori Hepner, whose art is featured in the Pittsburgh International Airport's New Terminal. Our guides are Lion Ambassadors Chamarra Ford (whose roots to McKeesport go back to her great grandmother), Tapashya Ghimirey, and Pratiksha Chapagain who are all connected to the region. Thank you to head librarian Andrew Marshall and Information Specialist Dan Jakubek as well as Connie Surman for orchestrating an action-packed visit!

In honor of the majority of Penn State faculty voting YES to a union, we are posting this episode of "On Location with the Laureate" TODAY! I was proudly wearing my @pennstatefacultyalliance pin when we filmed back in April 🎥 Take a trip to Fayette County, one of our pillars of union history in the United States, and meet coal miner's daughter and oral historian, Elaine DeFrank, writer and educator, Bobby Salitrik, and archivist Pam Seighman. Along with Dr. Dennis Brestensky, the late Evelyn Hovanec, and Albert Skomra, they founded the Coal and Coke Heritage Museum housed at the Penn State Fayette Campus library, a treasure trove of arteficts and stories about the coal and coke history in the region. Librarian Heather Page and Dr. Julio Palma, Penn State Faculty Alliance union members of the organizing committee, join our tour!

For more information about the region watch classic documentary, "Silver Cinders: the legacy of coal and coke in southwestern Pennsylvania" (2000) directed by Philip Ruth and made available on YouTube here by Steel Plant Museum of Western New York: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4erOjn5dtw

Meet my lovely "Lion Ambassador" guide, Cora Sisk, who takes us on a trip through the Scranton campus (and I got my steps in for the day... whew, lots of hills and steps!). A highlight was meeting the faculty, staff, and students at the talk... seeing the art at the library, and especially visiting the nursing labs where an entire ward at a hospital is simulated! Fun fact: when they print the simulated drug labels they always leave off one letter in the spelling of its name to ensure folks know its for educational purposes only. Thank you, Marianne Gable, the librarians, and the nursing team for hosting me at the campus!

It's May Day! A perfect time to visit the mines and think about labor history in Pennsylvania (if not the United States)! [Full episode Youtube link in bio]. The Hazleton campus was stunning, as was our visit to the historic Eberly Mines (which was also a filming location of the 1970 film, "Molly Maguires" directed by Martin Ritt) guided by filmmaker and PSU alum Tim Novotney! Nestled in Northeastern PA, Penn State Hazleton is another campus with an estate that was donated for the purposes of education. My guides were two wonderful "Lion Ambassadors," Mikayla and David, who took over some of my filming duties (thanks!) in addition to showing me some hidden gems... Then, we meet with Tim Novotney a Penn State Hazleton alum who is now a local Multimedia Producer at WVAI. He produced a ground-breaking (literally and figuratively) documentary, "The Secrets of Hazleton," for PBS' ViaShorts. We get a sneak peek of the underground city of Hazleton, walk through the Eckley Miner's Village, and run into one of the kids who were raised in the miner village and appeared in "The Molly Maguires."

Next episode is on YouTube [Link in Bio]! Take a stroll through Penn State's Wilkes-Barre campus rife with Conyngham history and visit professor Jonathan Pineno's forensic photography class focused on solving a crime. Art activist and volunteer, Janis Winter, takes us through the Hayfield House and estate which the Conyngham heirs donated to the university in 1968. (More intriguing history of the home of John and Bertha Conyngham is linked below). Some say John Conyngham may have passed away in the office of Director of Academic Affairs, Dr. Agnes Kim...

More on the Hayfield House Legacy: https://wilkesbarre.psu.edu/feature/legacy-hayfield-house

A small tidbit about the home: "Bertha’s bedroom—today the chancellor’s office—was modeled after the boudoir of Marie Antoinette at Versailles. Mirrors were strategically placed to reflect the landscape and the lighting. The bathtub, sink and lights from Bertha’s sink still remain in offices at the campus."

Our next episode is up on Youtube! [link in bio]. One of our easternmost campuses in the commonwealth is Penn State Abington. The campus is celebrating its 75th anniversary and a surprise (at least, to me!) is that Amelia Earhart attended school at this campus during the 1916/1917 school year when the main buildings housed the Ogontz School for Young Ladies! I spent some time in the Ogontz School archive with the librarian, got an insightful tour of the campus (including a goose sighting) with Associate Professor of Education, Dr. Boni Wozolek, and visited film classes taught by filmmaker Mendal Polish.Episode edited by Bryan Conyers with music by Spaces in Between (local artists!).

One of the priveleges of making my way through the Commonwealth is discovering the history of the region through educational institutions committed to keeping access to education equitable and local. My visit to Fayette was filled with just that including coal, unions, labor equities, and so much more! Thank you to Regional Chancellor Megan Nagel for making the visit possible and for all that you do on all three of the campuses you guide… I met terrific students, faculty, and administrators including Dr. Missy Robinson in Ad/PR, chemist and activist extraordinaire Dr. Julio Palma, and Student Engagement and Outreach Librarian Heather Page who gave me a tour of the library. One highlight was a mural by local artist Frank Melega. I will be returning for a visit to the treasured Coal and Heritage Center to meet some of its founders soon, so stay tuned! Until then, keep supporting equity in education... #educatelocallyempowerglobally

Watch our next episode about @pennstateharrisburg on YouTube [Link in bio]. In this episode, visit Penn State Harrisburg's campus and special archives. Meet Arts Manager Amy Banks of the Kulkarni Theatre, Vice Chancellor Dr. Vahid Motevalli, and take a peek into the archives with Dr. Glenn McGuigan and graduate student extraordinaire Payton Becker. (I even get to don the official blue archival lab coat!). The discoveries include the Alice K. Marshall Women's History and the Three Mile Island collections. One highlight for me, a native Yiddish speaker, is finding H. Leivik's Yiddish poem on the wall of the Holocaust Reading Room in the library. Keep watching!

Penn State Baseball players Ben Gritzer (senior) and Josh Stout (first year student) give us a tour of their beloved Penn State DuBois campus including the library, the new gym, the PAW center, and even a class on wildlife and taxidermy. We visit the Chancellor, Dr. Jungwoo Ryoo, who shows them a valuable gift presented by Walt Disney himself on November 20, 1939 of an original painting on celluloid of Donald Duck to honor the DuBois campus' name at the time D.U.C. (DuBois University Campus).

Thank you to the Penn State York Campus for being a terrific host and giving me such rich insight into the multitudes of strengths of the programs on campus and how they are connected to the local environs… It is clear that Director of Academic Affairs, Dr. Bob Farrell, has enabled a space for critical thinking and community engagement. While there, I gave a workshop at a class on Human Development and Family Studies and met students interning locally at youth organizations. Sweet coincidence: The class was taught by Penn State Film Production alum, Joseph Molloy’s mom, Dr. Sonia Molloy! It was inspiring to meet the film club who attended the lunch talk with their fearless leader, Film Student, Darien Reimold. Darien was my tour guide through campus which included meeting the ad/pr pitching team — he is working on a documentary about the campus — and he introduced me to the robotic football club too! Thank you so much to Dr. Joy Giguere, associate professor of History, for organizing my class visits, lunch at @hamirs_indian_fusion, the public talk and especially for giving me a tour of the Prospect Hill Cemetery, filled with fascinating insights into cultural rituals. Joy introduced me to Samantha Dorm who is involved with the Pennsylvania Hallowed Grounds and Black Cemetery Networks as well as the National Cemetery Administration to support African American Veterans. We visited some of her six generations of family at the Lebanon Cemetery and the York County History Center… including an ancestral quilt from her family thats she donated to the collection. The 3-day whirlwind tour last week was filled with adventure and local keepers… I even got to take two new plants home! Stay tuned for the “On Location with the Laureate” episodes from that trip coming soon…
