🌞 Good morning, sunshine! Let me introduce myself: I’m Nina Paim, a 37-year-old Brazilian immigrant designer, curator, editor, organizer, and mother of two. Guess what? I’m also on the rollercoaster of emotions about opening a publisher!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’m a mystic atheist who finds daily guidance in Tarot cards. (Today, it’s the VI of Wands that’s got me posting!) I have a weird obsession with sharpening pencils ✏️, my go-to color is yellow 💛, and I’m currently crushing it on level 1500 of my phone games.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Originally from a small town in the countryside of Rio de Janeiro, I’ve spent the last 18 years in a constant state of diaspora, living in Rio, Amsterdam, Berlin, St. Gallen, Basel, and Porto. (Sometimes, I can’t help but daydream about moving again!) My friends are scattered across the globe, so I’m always cooking up projects as an excuse to bring us together. 🌍❤️
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I thrive on collaborations, but I’ve also experienced the pain of friendship breakups. I’ve curated exhibitions, events, workshops, and conferences, taught in schools across Europe and the Americas, and edited two anthologies. Plus, I recently helped birth Porto’s first feminist festival of publishing and design @etceteras_porto.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Although I’m starting this publisher solo, I know nothing happens in isolation. Bikini exists because many beautiful people give me strength, love, and support. There are exciting collaborations and partnerships in the works, and I hope that someday, Bikini will grow into a house for many lovers of feminist publishing and everything around it!

SPACES FOR ORIENTATION
– Design Education in Precarious Times
Braunschweig University of Arts (Aula)
May 12, 2026 from 11:00
Johannes Selena-Platz 1
38118 Braunschweig
Introducing the speakers:
Nina Paim
Nina Paim is a designer and publisher based in Porto. Born and raised in Nova Friburgo, Brazil, she has lived in France, Germany, Switzerland, and Portugal. These moves have sometimes brought feelings of isolation, but they also led her to seek out community and build an international network that is now central to her practice. She is especially interested in how books, exhibitions, and events can create spaces where people meet, share, learn, and change together. Her work focuses on directing, supporting, and collaborating – mainly through her roles as a curator and editor. She reflects on how ideas become practice, and how practice shapes ideas, drawing on her own path into feminist publishing.
Nina Paim holds a BA from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and an MA from the HKB University of Applied Sciences in Bern, Switzerland. A three-time recipient of the Swiss Design Awards, she has taught and lectured internationally. Her writing has been published by Occasional Papers, Les presses du réel, ESAD-IDEA, Aveditions, and the Korea Society of Typography. In 2024, she was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of the Arts London.

Yesterday, thinking about beach reads, common readers, design and the everyday, and asking the universe to send us more creative, compelling, thrilling reads on design politics! Thanks Francisco Laranjo,@bau_bcn, @dellilusofona for the great invite!

Kids: Find people that make you laugh, so that when things get crazy you pull through together with humor and friendship. @terezabettinardi this was the most insane marathon ever but it was also the funniest run! ❤️

Freezing weather, the warmest welcome!
Kicking off my first days in Stockholm, where I’ll be an artist-in-residence at @iaspis.se until the end of February, fully dedicated to pushing forward @bikini.books.
I haven’t felt this much warmth, generosity, and hospitality in a long time. So excited to spend the coming weeks surrounded by such an incredible roster of artists, designers, and writers. Bonus: I live above the most beautiful cinema!

The Comunoteca public programme has come to an end
Over the past three weeks, we have turned the Biblioteca Popular de Pedro Ivo into a meeting place where we danced, smiled, learned and even cried together.
We would like to thank everyone who made Comunoteca possible — especially Nina Paim, the programme’s curator, and Rosário, who always welcomed us so warmly 🫂
Because the Biennale wishes to continue beyond the events, we hope that everything we discussed and shared at Praça do Marquês will have a lasting effect on society, both within and beyond the field of design 💜

/
A shared library, a meeting point, a collective space for reflection, organizing, and struggle: this is the Comunoteca
From October 28 to November 15, as part of the Porto Design Biennale, the Comunoteca’s public program invites three weeks to think not only about what we design, but how we live, work, and resist — in and beyond design.
From performative readings on women typographers erased from official history to debates on wages, contracts, and unions, the Comunoteca insists on seeing design as a field of labor. Open assemblies, cooperative networks, and kinship libraries bet on the collective as method. Instead of competition, it proposes friendship. At the center of it all, care as a political foundation — the basis for another kind of creative economy, one that values rest, affection, and solidarity 🫂

The dream of starting Bikini came from a desire to honor feminist publishing of the past—magazines, periodicals, newsletters, presses, and so many others whose legacy we stand on. We exist because they did.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Bikini’s program began as a simple idea: a visual anthology of feminist periodicals that could bring designers and historians together—a meeting place. Today, we’re thrilled to share that, thanks to the generous support of Criatório/Plaka Porto (@plakaporto), DGArtes (@dg.artes), and the Graham Foundation (@grahamfoundation), our project is on track and will be published next year!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Over the past two and a half years, we’ve been digging through archives, selecting 60 periodicals that sprang from the democratization of print production in the 1960s. These publications show how graphic design and typography were crucial to circulating feminist messages long before social media. We reached out to journalists, historians, and designers to write about these periodicals and have gathered an incredible lineup of contributors, including Zenobia Ahmed, Engy Aly, Vera Lúcia Araújo Jimenes, Dina Benbrahim, Hólmfríður Benediktsdóttir, Hanna Bergman, Karoline Buer, Lissa Choukrane, Lizania Cruz, Lara Dautun, Mariachiara De Leo, Julie R. Enszer, Loraine Furter, Marina Garone, Sinem Görücü, Magali Guaresi, Itzia Solís González, Una María Magnúsdóttir, Awel Houati, Yanchi Huang, Kay Jun, Luzia Knobel, Nicole Khoury, Ravistra Mehra, Faride Mereb, Friederike Mehl, Neo Maditla, Nontsikelelo Mutiti, Maria Paganopoulou, Kaiya Warea and so many others!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
📖 The book is co-edited by Clara Meliande (@clarameliande) and Nina Paim (@paimnina), and features and will also feature original essays: by Briar Levit (@briarlevit) explores the print production techniques that enabled these artifacts to circulate, while Mel Waters and Victorian Bazin of (@liberatinghistories) examine activist media and feminist pedagogies! Graphic Design by Atelier Carvalho Bernau (@carvalho_bernau).
