My Mother was a wonder.
The sort of presence that leaves impressions on truly every single person whose path she ever crossed.
It’s strange a year without her, everyone told me her absence would be like an anchor, dragging me to places I had never hoped to go, making every step heavy, an empty void of immeasurable weight.
But that’s not the legacy my mother chose to leave.
Racelle was a maven of change, a creative force a driving energy to anyone who ever spent a moment in her presence.
I’ve watched people who only spent an hour with her take that charge as a catapult into careers, endeavors and endless pursuits that without her they may never have even considered as a pathway.
I spent a lifetime with my mother.
Her legacy is one of growth, one of creation, one where every thought, every action ,every choice I make will forever be through the lenses that she so carefully polished for me.
She instilled in all of those around her a sense of vision
a sense of hope
a driving sense that we are agents of our own fate, and a deep seated responsibility to care for those around us, and even those against us.
My mother was not blindly compassionate
She understood that many make choices through clouded eyes
but she never for an instant denied those people their humanity.
She held those around her to the standard that kindness and compassion is the core of our very being.
I have been charged to live her legacy
to continue her work
to offer help to those in need
guidance to those who are lost
sustenance to those who hunger
space to those who for a moment need loneliness to heal
and presence for when they return, looking for companionship and care.
my mother did everything in her power to take whatever access, privilege, perspective and poise she had, and use it to open doors for those who may not even have been sure that they had someone willing to advocate for them.
I am forever my mother’s son.
I will always be Racelle’s legacy.
Her memory is a blessing.
