Iโ€™m pleased to announce David Hughes will be Lake Macquarie City Councilโ€™s new Chief Executive Officer.
David brings strong experience, proven leadership and a deep connection to our city. He grew up in Belmont and continues to call Lake Macquarie home. Heโ€™s the right person to lead the organisation over the next four years and help Lake Macquarie continue to thrive.
I also want to thank Tony Farrell for his steady leadership and commitment during his time as acting CEO.
David will commence in his new role as CEO in August.

Lake Macquarie City Councilโ€™s next meeting will take place at Hunter Sports Centre, kaiyu nungkiliko on Monday 25 May, with an ordinary meeting starting at 6:30pm.

Items listed for discussion include a Mayoral Minute to celebrate 120 years of Council, the Revised Delivery Program 2025-2029 and Operational Plan, Budget and Fees and Charges 2026-2027 following public exhibition, and the draft Housing Strategy.

Ever wondered what our Lifeguards get up to during the off season?

Alongside delivering water safety programs to students, our Lifeguards run community first aid workshops at Lake Mac Libraries during winter school holidays. These sessions are inclusive of parents and also cover senior first aid.

Please remember that during the winter season, our beloved beaches are not patrolled. For your safety, we strongly advise against swimming at this time. If you find yourself in an emergency on our beaches, please contact Triple Zero (000).

Together we will walk in unity along the foreshore of Lake Mac, showing our shared commitment to building respectful relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the wider community.

Meet us at the Warners Bay Foreshore rotunda from 10am, next Wednesday 27 May for an all inclusive walk and let's stand together, walk together and be All In for reconciliation.

Happy National Volunteer Week to our wonderful Landcare volunteers๐Ÿ’š

National Volunteer Week (18-24 May) is a time to say thank you and recognise the invaluable contributions of our volunteers. This year's theme, 'Your Year to Volunteer' celebrates the amazing efforts our volunteers have already made in 2026 and encourages others to get involved in ways that work for them - because there is no one way to volunteer.

Rehabilitation works have revitalised more than 150m of foreshore at Shingle Splitters Point, with rock revetment installed to protect the shoreline after severe mid-2025 storms.

The $200,000 project helps safeguard one of Balcolynโ€™s most scenic lakeside locations, preserving its stunning views towards Pulbah Island and Myuna Bay for the community to enjoy.

Delivered in partnership with the Biraban Local Aboriginal Land Council, the project brought Council staff and Aboriginal heritage officers together to protect both the environmental and cultural values of the site.

Council has recommended funding for 27 community and school led projects to celebrate NAIDOC Week 2026, alongside four university research projects tackling everything from low carbon construction to amphibian disease monitoring.

The recommendations include allocating $14,985 for NAIDOC Week 2026, as well as $27,236 toward four projects under the 2025-2026 Environmental Research Grants program.

Following last night's Standing Committee meeting, Council also endorsed a recommendation for Councillor Madeline Bishop to attend the NSW Public Libraries Association annual conference. She will represent Lake Macquarie at the forum, which focuses on community-centred library services, collaboration and leadership.

Find youth and family support at Edgeworth, welcoming spaces at Cameron Park, and counselling, food relief and wellbeing programs at Woodrising, Sugarvalley, Belmont Neighbourhood Centres and The Place Charlestown.
