It’s hard to believe this season with the Gotta Be MeHeartland Choir has come to an end, but what an incredible journey it has been. In the fall, the choir embraced rehearsal with enthusiasm, working hard to learn songs in the round and steadily building their repertoire toward a variety of performances. Along the way, they grew not only as singers, but also as an ensemble. As the season continued, the group shifted its focus to preparing festive Christmas events, sharing their heart with audiences at each opportunity. When spring arrived, they were diving straight into preparations for the Gotta Be Me show, created in partnership with Circle Theatre, Echoes of the Prairie.

Echoes of the Prairie was a beautiful and heartfelt show centered on the different groups of people who settled in Nebraska in the early days of the state. The production served as the culmination of months of meaningful work, with the Gotta Be Me participants playing a role in every single aspect of the show. They spent months working with Circle Theatre to craft an original script that brought the stories of these settlers to life in a thoughtful and creative way. Onstage, Gotta Be Me portrayed these characters and the real-life people who inspired them with dignity, care, and respect. Even more exciting, the story will continue beyond this season. In the fall, Circle Theatre will take this same script and create a touring show that will travel across Nebraska, allowing the voices of the Gotta Be Me participants who helped create it to reach an even wider audience.

Recently, Gotta Be Me and Circle Theatre participants alike gathered to celebrate the end of the season and all that they had accomplished throughout the year. They did this the best way they knew how to: through a karaoke and dance party! The joy in the room was palpable, and everyone was encouraging each other to get up and sing. Even those who didn’t sing a solo still sang along to the music they knew and loved. It was a great way to celebrate a year to be proud of!
