🌱 Our new logo isn’t just a fresh look—it’s a symbol of our mission to make smallholder farmers more prosperous. Each part of the Prosperity Leaf represents one of the ways we support farmers.

Last week, we shared Abishai’s story of productivity. By planting soya beans through One Acre Fund, he was able to increase his harvest and reinvest in his family’s future.

Productivity is just one part of the journey. When farmers prosper, whole communities do too.

✨ Join us as we explore each impact area represented in the Prosperity Leaf—and together, let’s create more pathways to prosperity.

🌱 Our new logo isn't just a new look. It's a symbol of One Acre Fund's mission to make smallholder farmers more prosperous, bringing together our main focus areas for impact.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be focusing on each of the areas represented in the Prosperity Leaf, and this week it’s ‘Building Resilience’. 🌳

This impact category builds on ‘Driving Productivity’, ensuring that smallholder farmers not only grow more but can do so for generations to come.

To help farmers build long-term resilience, we provide solutions that support weather adaptation and mitigation, soil health, income diversification, and safety nets, such as insurance.

With resilience to withstand weather and economic shocks, farmers gain the stability to build lasting prosperity.

✨ Follow along this week as we share stories of resilience and join us in creating pathways to prosperity.

🌿 Our new logo isn’t just a new look—it’s a symbol of our mission to make smallholder farmers more prosperous, bringing together our main focus areas for impact.

Over the last few weeks, we’ve shared how we’re supporting farmers who are Driving Productivity, and Building Resilience. Now, we’re looking at the final line of the leaf: Strengthening Markets.

Even when farmers grow a surplus, too many still struggle to sell at a fair price. Gaps in value chains and limited access to buyers mean missed income opportunities. That’s why we’re building bridges to better markets so that farmers can earn more from every harvest.

Here’s how we do it:
✅ Supporting certification and quality control so farmers can earn premium prices
✅ Aggregating and purchasing harvests directly through local buying centers
✅ Negotiating with buyers on behalf of farmers to secure the best possible prices

Together, these steps open the door to lasting prosperity. 💡
👉🏿 Join us in creating pathways to prosperity.

Making markets work for smallholders. 🌶️

Despite making up 80% of the farming population in sub-Saharan Africa, smallholder farmers still struggle to sell their produce at a fair price.

Difficulty accessing these markets can mean missed income opportunities for farm families.

Our market access work supports smallholders in accessing and earning better prices in local and international markets, ensuring they can earn the most for their families and their communities.

👋🏿 Meet Happyness, a 27-year-old farmer and tree nursery owner in Tanzania.

When she graduated from college in 2024, she found that formal employment was scarce. However, as part of her intern work, she’d noticed that many people were applying for timber permits. This experience encouraged her to go into tree seedling production. It’s a decision that is now supporting her own future as well as the futures of farmers throughout her community.

"I came from college and didn't have a job, so I saw an opportunity in producing seedlings," Happyness says.

Today, Happyness is a tree nursery manager, working with One Acre Fund to grow 50,000 Albizia seedlings. With support including seeds, materials, and training, she’s building a business that puts knowledge into practice and creates income at the same time.

"Through this work together with One Acre Fund, I get both training and money," Happyness says.

"I have learned how to produce new species that I have never produced before."

Her nursery is more than a business. It’s part of a wider system - supplying trees to farmers, strengthening farms, and supporting livelihoods across her community.

Because when women and youth are supported to lead in agriculture, the impact grows far beyond one farm. 🌱

We’re supporting farmers to plant cashew trees across Tanzania, but what happens beyond the farm? 🌱

These photos show cashew processing in action, where raw harvests are prepared and packaged for sale. It’s a crucial step in the connection we have helped farmers build with wider markets, helping turn their hard work into reliable income.

Alongside seedling distribution, we’re working with partners to build stronger links between farmers and processors, so more of what’s grown can be sold, valued, and shared more widely.

It’s how a single tree can grow into something bigger - from planting, to processing, to new opportunities for farmers and their families.

👋🏿 Meet Primitive, a farmer and mother of four in Rwanda.

She grows maize and beans, and since working with One Acre Fund, her harvest has doubled. But for a long time, selling that harvest wasn’t easy.

“Before accessing markets through One Acre Fund, I used to sell my harvest to middlemen who offered low prices. Now, I sell at a better price approved by the government,” she said.

With access to better markets, her harvest has become more than food for her family - it’s a reliable source of income.

“The first time I sold through One Acre Fund, I earned over 300,000 Rwandan francs ($200) from four 100kg bags of maize. I used that money to buy land worth $190 Rwandan francs,” she added.

Now, each season is opening up new possibilities.

“This season, I am achieving even more. My priority is to pay school fees and buy school materials, and then discuss with my husband other important investments we can make,” she said.

Because when farmers can access the right markets, a harvest can do more than feed a family - it can help shape their future. 🌱

How do avocados become oil? 🥑

Avocados are naturally rich in oils, which means even the ones that can’t be sold at market still have real value.

We work with smallholder farmers and local processing partners to turn them into avocado oil, the same kind you see bottled for cooking and cosmetics.

By connecting farmers to processing plants, fruit that might otherwise go to waste becomes something more. A new product, a new market, and an extra source of income.

It might sound simple, but it makes a big impact, helping farmers make the most of what they grow, and access opportunities that go beyond the local market. 🌱

Healthy soil starts with what farmers already have. 🌱

Compost is a simple, powerful way for farmers to improve their land using everyday materials like crop waste, grasses, and ash. By turning these into compost, nutrients are returned to the soil, helping it stay productive season after season.

That’s why we train farmers in composting, and the benefits go far beyond the soil:

🌻 Healthier soil that can support crops year after year

🌽 Increased harvests, as crops have what they need to grow stronger

⛈️ Greater protection against unpredictable weather, with soil that holds moisture and supports plants through drier periods

Compost is also completely accessible. It doesn’t rely on expensive inputs; it’s made from resources farmers already have on their farms. That means more control, lower costs, and a solution that can be used by everyone.

Through training, we help farmers learn how to make and use compost effectively, so they can build stronger harvests today while protecting their soil for the future.

Better harvests don’t happen by chance. 🌽

They start with knowledge - the right techniques, shared at the right time, in the right way.

At One Acre Fund, that knowledge is built through research and farmer surveys, shaped for real farms, and offered directly to farmers through local field officers, call centers, and mobile tools.

When knowledge reaches the last mile, farmers can put it into practice - and see real results.

🥑 Avocado oil has been rising in popularity in recent years due to its nutritional benefits, its versatility for cooking, and it’s use as a natural ingredient in cosmetics. How are we supporting farmers to cash in on the increased market demand?

Recently, we’ve sourced over 400 MT of avocados from smallholder farmers for our program in Kenya, where we process them into avocado oil.

This means smallholder farmers have a use for the avocados that aren’t sold at market and can access new markets they otherwise wouldn’t be able to.
