MWTM w/ @pawnpawntbp ✨ reviewing recent work with @brotherjax . Unreal opportunity to present the record to the wizard, one of my favorite mixing engineers, and dive into what worked and how to think about mixing moving forward. Truthfully, Shawn was so kind and actually really dug the music (nice job, Jax). We played around with the stems and actually drove the organ and Rhodes parts a bit harder as we move into the building climactic part of this song. Shawn really taught us to be bold with our mixing decisions, to sculpt frequencies like it’s the only thing that matters, and then to drive them and make them big. He also taught us, through his workflow more than his words, to have our techniques, toolkits, and ears sharp, and then to use them in the most creative and abundant ways possible, often beyond our imaginations. We would all walk out of these sessions like… “what just happened?” “He turned a demo into a hit record”…. It was mind blowing. It was inspiring. It was fun! It’s been about a month now, and I’m still digesting the experience, and beginning to incorporate further exploration and boldness into my engineering and mixing with artists has been a blast, and I know it’s only the mere beginning.
