I was going through some old work recently and these shots from January 2020 popped up.

@emmalangbridge and I were up in northern Sri Lanka on assignment, interviewing female entrepreneurs supported by @carenetherlands and the @hmfoundation, when the first faint whispers of a new flu like virus started drifting through the villages. We barely took any notice, and it’s fascinating to look back on now, considering the enormous toll it would eventually take on the world.

I often wonder how families in these rural communities coped compared to us privileged, convenience dependent societies. Despite the hardships and history that have plagued the north, I witnessed so much resilience, self sufficiency, independence, and community. Arudselvi and her family seemed happy and content, thriving in their own way modestly equipped, yet capable and sustainable.

In comparison, little could be said about my own situation. Spoiled by various comforts and vices, it has become very apparent in hindsight just how fragile the framework of my foundations really were.

MaanKyker 2022
People Of The Promenade (Ongoing Project)

Bit late but Eid Mubarak to all my Islamic friends. Unfortunately missed Maankyker this year as I was feeling a lil under the weather but this portrait was taken last year during the celebration on the Sea Point promenade.

I am honoured to have been shortlisted for the British Journal Of Photography's @portrait_of_humanity printed & pressed by @hoxtonminipress . Congrats to all the other shortlists and winners. Go check out the beautiful selections over @bjp1854 or order a copy of Vol. 5 at @hoxtonminipress.I’m really looking forward to getting my hands on this book. Special thanks to @concreteapostles @outdoorraw_ and @ohdiehard for giving me access to the breakdancing world here in Cape Town.

People Of The Promenade (Ongoing Project)

Ram 1 (Ramone De Wet) - First Generation South African B-Boy, stands for a portrait against a classic Cape Town sunset on the Seapoint promenade.

“In the wake of the pandemic it’s become apparent how important public spaces are to us as individuals and to society as a whole. This is especially true for South Africans, given our segregated history. The Sea Point Promenade, once a whites-only public amenity, now thrives with all walks of life, celebrating the incredible change and progression our society has made.”

Squeezed in a few portraits with @lookitsleon and the rest of the team whilst on our last shoot of 2022. I’m very grateful to be working alongside such talent and good energy.

Shot these with the #MamiyaRB67 on @kodak TMax 400. Used an Aperture 600D and some polly boards. Pretty stoked with the results.
