Frustrations boiled over Saturday as displaced residents and community leaders awaiting the possible explosion of a chemical storage tank in Garden Grove demanded answers from public officials.

Here is what we know about methyl methacrylate, the substance at the center of the emergency, and the currently unknown temperature of the malfunctioning tank.

Experts and emergency crews have been working for nearly two days to try and prevent a potentially catastrophic chemical spill or explosion at Garden Grove aerospace manufacturing facility, but have so far been unable to find a fix.

Here’s a glance at what makes fixing the damaged tank so challenging.

In the interest of public safety, all readers have free access to our map displaying the evacuation area around the malfunctioning chemical tank in Garden Grove.

An evacuation center opened late Friday afternoon at Savannah High School in Anaheim, adding to the two that opened earlier at Garden Grove Sports & Recreation Center and the Cypress Community Center.

For community members who need assistance or information, the city has established a 24-hour call center at 714-741-5444.

Roughly 40,000 people were still under evacuation orders early Saturday morning, as authorities continued to try to head off the disastrous threat of a malfunctioning chemical storage tank that authorities cautioned was on the verge of exploding and creating a toxic cloud or cracking open and leaking volatile chemicals.

Crews have so far managed to buy time to find an “out of the box” solution to the compromised tank containing a mix of flammable, volatile chemicals used in plastics and manufacturing that overheated at GKN Aerospace in Garden Grove.

An explosion expected to produce a toxic cloud, which already has triggered 40,000 evacuations, could happen as soon as Friday, officials said, following a malfunction in a tank containing a flammable, volatile chemical at an aerospace plant in Garden Grove.

Or the chemical could spill, creating a mess near the site but without the far-reaching uncertainty.

“We have a tank that is actively in crisis,” Orange County Fire Authority Division Chief Craig Covey said at a news conference on Friday afternoon. “This thing is going to fail. We don’t know when.”

Thousands of residents and businesses in Garden Grove were evacuated again Friday morning, May 22, after a vapor release from a 34,000-gallon tank containing an industrial chemical used in plastics and manufacturing at an aerospace plant.

The chemical is methyl methacrylate, often used to make resins and plastics, and is “irritating to the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes in humans,” the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says.

Evacuation orders were reissued at 6:15 a.m. and updated about 10:45 a.m. for residents north of Trask Avenue, east of Valley View, west of Dale Street and south of Ball Road, a larger perimeter affecting more residents.

Evacuation centers were set up Friday morning at the Garden Grove Sports & Recreation Center, at 13641 Deodara Drive, and at Stanton City Hall and the Community Center, at 7800 Katella Ave.

Over the next four years, UCI researchers hope to recruit 1,800 Asian Americans living in Orange and Los Angeles counties to participate in a study.

The will be merged with similar pools of information collected at UC San Francisco, UC Davis, Cedars-Sinai and Temple University to create what researchers have named the ASPIRE (Asian American Prospective Research) Cohort, a pool of information from roughly 20,000 people.

Starting in early June, Disneyland will eliminate a rule that restricted parkhopping until after 11 a.m. in an effort to simplify the visitor experience.

The rule change will bring back a popular perk that allowed daily visitors and Magic Key annual passholders to cross between Disneyland and Disney California Adventure at any time.

Santa Ana’s Cesar Chavez High School will be renamed in honor of Dolores Huerta following allegations that recently surfaced the Chicano labor and union organizer had groomed and sexually abused females in the movement.

The change was approved by the Santa Ana Unified School District this week.

Huerta, a renowned Chicana labor leader and civil rights activist, reflects what district officials called a “commitment to equity, perseverance, and service.”
