Coordinamento generale e accessibilità: Valeria Bottalico, TBA21–Academy/Ocean Space
Supervisione contenuti scientifici: Marta Picciulin, CNR ISMAR
Traduzione LIS: Fabio Zamparo
Grafica e illustrazioni: Elisa Calore
Post-produzione e animazioni: Matteo Stocco, Kinonauts

Cosa sono i diritti della natura? 👇

🌊 Siete tutti/e invitati a partecipare!

What are the Rights of Nature? 👇

Together with Pietro Consolandi, co-curator of the initiative Nature Speaks, we explore the origins and demands of what United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has described as the fastest-growing legal movement of the twenty-first century.

In Venice, a broad alliance of citizens’ groups, activists, and researchers has already published a declaration calling for the Lagoon to be granted its own rights and legal personhood.

🗓️ On Saturday, May 16, from 11am to 2pm, at Ocean Space, we will hold the first citizens’ assembly to discuss the topic together with the community and the activists of IDRA – Initiative for the Rights of Water Networks, and to explore how to move forward so that the Venice Lagoon can be protected and respected.

🌊 Everyone is warmly invited to participate!

❗ Participation is free, but registration is required via the link in bio.

📍 Ocean Space, Venezia
🗓️ Ingresso gratuito, da mercoledì alla domenica, 11:00 - 18:00

"Tide of Returns" stems from the many small rituals that constitute the ecological wisdom and care of the artists.

🌊 The installations "From My Mother’s Country" by Repatriates Collective and "Waving Connections" by Verena Melgarejo Weinandt explore the possibility of overcoming forms of cultural, social, and environmental violence.

The stories told take shape from the language of the earth, the Ocean, and the bodies that recount them.

As experiments of possible relationships between human beings and the Ocean, the works on display evoke stories of families, practices, and ancestors, showing new ways of living and working after the devastation produced by colonial domination and extractive economies.

🗓️ "Tide of Returns," commissioned and produced by TBA21–Academy, curated by Jhadija von Zinnenburg Carroll
📍 Ocean Space, Venice
🗓️ Free entry, from Wednesday to Sunday, 11am - 6pm.

✨ On May 5, TBA21–Academy’s Ocean Space and Frame Contemporary Art Finland hosted a special event celebrating the exhibitions “Tide of Returns” and Jenna Sutela’s “Aeolian Suite” at the Pavilion of Finland. Thank you everyone for joining!

Guests were greeted by the fragrance of “ON (h)AIR,” an olfactory intervention by Sissel Tolaas.

🎷Musician Tapiwa Svosve filled the space with powerful saxophone notes as he guided participants to the second wing of the former church of San Lorenzo. There, the energetic and multilingual rap performances by MC Yallah and Debmaster heated up the evening, which was perfectly wrapped up by the DJ set from Bill Kouligas.

🫧Artist Jenna Sutela, who is currently exhibiting at the Biennale in the Finnish Pavilion, also contributed to the celebration with a cocktail — named Grammelot, after the Commedia dell’arte non-language that inspired her installation “Aeolian Suite” — featuring ingredients such as sea (tasting) water.

A special thanks to @selectaperitivo and @perlage_winery Technical Sponsors of the event, and to @repower_italia Electric Mobility Partner.

🌊 During the opening week of Biennale 2026, the public program of TBA21–Academy's Ocean Space brought attention back to the importance of listening, relationships, and collective care — towards other human and more-than-human beings, as well as the ecosystem.

🫧 Over four days, presentations, conversations, and performances expanded on the themes of the exhibition Tide of Returns, delving into collective imaginaries, colonial erasure, memory, and repatriation as a living, ongoing, and shared practice.

Thank you to everyone who took part, visited the exhibition, or simply chose to pause with us, even if only for a moment.

Our deepest thanks to all speakers, partners, and collaborators who activated Ocean Space with ideas, questions, and reflections. 💙

@artreview_magazine is the Strategic Media Partner of Ocean Space’s program during the Biennale opening week.
@alcantara_company partner of Weaving Connections (2026) by Verena Melgarejo Weinandt, made the performance Braiding Connections possible.
@perlage_winery and @selectaperitivo supported selected events as technical sponsors.
@repower_italia participated as Electric Mobility Partner on selected days.
