NY-12, which includes both the Upper West and Upper East Sides, is the smallest and most population-dense congressional district in the country, one that candidates can crisscross several times over in an afternoon. It is among the wealthiest and oldest districts in the United States and is also the district with the most college graduates. If you listen to the candidates, the battle for NY-12 is not just about who will be the next member of the city’s congressional delegation but a contest among factions of the island’s Democratic base: the old-money elite, the anti-Trump resisters, the tech-world crusaders, and the old-school party Establishment.

While nearly a dozen candidates are vying for the district’s congressional seat, the primary is coming down to just four: Micah Lasher, a state assemblyman from the Upper West Side and a longtime political hand who is Jerry Nadler’s anointed successor; Alex Bores, an assemblyman from the Upper East Side whose calls for AI regulation have led to millions of dollars being spent both for and against him; George Conway, the onetime Republican lawyer who has achieved notoriety as a leader of the #Resistance; and a previously little-known social-media influencer who is trying to rewrite the rules of New York City politics.

“It’s New York-sized,” that social-media influencer, Jack Schlossberg, said when asked why this campaign is different. Schlossberg’s presence in the race proves the point.

For our Cover Story, David Freedlander reports on how four liberal-but-not-left Democrats are racing to be the face of Manhattan. Read it at the link in our bio.

NY-12 “is not a district like most,” says one pollster. “You go around the country and the No. 1 issue is affordability and the cost of living, and those are the 8,000th-most important issues in this district, which is filled with affluent white liberals who are singularly obsessed with what Donald Trump is doing to our country.”

While nearly a dozen candidates are vying for the district’s congressional seat, the primary is coming down to just four: Micah Lasher, a state assemblyman from the Upper West Side and a longtime political hand; Alex Bores, an assemblyman from the Upper East Side whose calls for Al regulation have led to millions of dollars being spent both for and against him; George Conway, the onetime Republican lawyer who has achieved notoriety as a leader of the #Resistance; and Jack Schlossberg, the Kennedy and social-media influencer, who is trying to rewrite the rules of New York City politics.

Part of what makes the race such a political junkies’ delight is that the stakes are so low. This isn’t a presidential contest, or a mayoral contest, or even a swing-seat congressional race. It’s a primary between four liberal-but-not-left Democrats with similar views on the issues. And so the battle is really about what wins elections in Manhattan in our post-Mamdani era. Can social-media savvy beat experience? Does the West Side political machine still matter? Is there anything more important than impeaching and removing Trump? Or can a bunch of Trump-aligned tech-industry donors alter the contours of a congressional race in a deep-blue bastion in New York City?

Hugh Jackman takes top billing in ‘The Sheep Detectives’ as murder victim George Hardy, but the movie’s real leads are its animal characters, which are all members of George’s flock of artfully computer-generated sheep. There’s Sebastian (Bryan Cranston), a brooding Icelandic ram who keeps to himself, and Cloud (Regina Hall), a fluffy Cheviot known for her looks. Sir Ritchfield (Patrick Stewart) is a doughty elder Boreray with majestic horns, but Mopple (Chris O’Dowd), a doofy Merino, turns out to be deceptively wise himself. Then there’s Lily, a tan Shetland voiced with devastating sincerity by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who takes it upon herself to lead an investigation into her beloved owner’s death.

When Lily dares to venture off the land where she’s spent her entire life, she’s not just confronting a mystery but a larger reality that’s more complicated than she ever imagined. “It makes ‘The Sheep Detectives’ a fascinating movie for kids, but it’s an improbably effective and tear-jerking one for adults as well,” writes film critic Alison Willmore.

At the link in our bio, Willmore writes about why there’s something worthy of salute in the way ‘The Sheep Detectives’ tackles the topic of death.

We know how to throw a kick-grass party 🤭 On May 7, reality TV’s finest landed on Manhattan’s Lawn Club to celebrate, well, themselves. After walking the @goldbond carpet, our esteemed guests stopped by our livestream, which featured interviews and moments from our video studio.

The event, held in honor of Vulture’s first-ever class of #realitymasterminds, fizzed with excitement and was filled with unexpected run-ins: To turn a corner was to see @tiffany_hbic_pollard and @foodgod deep in conversation, surely plotting their next reality-TV move. Cosmetics lovers and dutiful husbands flocked to the @elfcosmetics activation to get glammed up or go home with a personalized lip oil stick, while @vitaminwater made sure that no one was thirsty and @sonicdrivein entertained the crowd with lawn games. At around 8:30 p.m., @imkylecooke paused his DJ set to announce that it was time to hand out awards to this year’s Master of Culture, @bravoandy, and Forever Icon, @kathyhilton.

Tap the link in bio to read more about the night, including which star quickly became the party’s go-to First Lady, which star showed up first and left last, and more ✨

At around 8:30 p.m., @imkylecooke paused his DJ set to announce that it was time to hand out awards to this year’s Master of Culture, @bravoandy, and Forever Icon, @kathyhilton.

As a middle-schooler, the Roots’ Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter (@blackthought) was known as “The Pretzel Guy” because he’d spend first period selling hot soft pretzels that he picked up from a local factory. Since then, food has developed into a love language. This past Monday, he brought homemade lunch to 30 Rock for his fellow bandmates to enjoy before prepping for @fallontonight, where they’ve been the longtime backing band. He does this once every other month as a morale booster — though most recently, it was by request. The menu included six half jerk chickens and jerk wings, cedar-plank salmon, some snapper filets, crab legs, plantains and rice and peas, whipped up that morning. (And a few DoorDashed sides he didn’t have time to make.)

In addition to that, he’s had his hands in a few projects, including work on the most recent Gorillaz album and an upcoming show at the Jazz Club at Aman next Thursday. But there’s a lot that he can only say with food. “The need to create carries over and transcends medium,” he says. “Sometimes I want to paint a picture with words, or write a song, or tell a story with my outfit. And other times, it manifests itself onto the plate.”

they're at our first-ever REALITY MASTERMINDS celebration — of course they know how to introduce themselves on camera 🙂‍↕️

when they weren't too busy enjoying the party at @thelawnclubny with products from @goldbond, @elfcosmetics, @vitaminwater, and @sonicdrivein, we stopped guests (from @bostonrobmariano to @thecut editor-in-chief @lrpeoples) to ask them what their Real Housewives tagline would be. let's just say, we'd be sat for a show with this cast... 👀🫖

Five years ago, the average WNBA game would have around 300,000 viewers; now, viewership routinely passes 1 million. Joe Tsai and Clara Wu Tsai, the billionaires who acquired the New York Liberty in 2019, helped foment this interest in the team locally. They set off on a soup-to-nuts remodel: new star players in Sabrina Ionescu, Jonquel Jones, and Breanna Stewart; a brand makeover, complete with Ellie the Elephant; and, most crucially, a rescue mission to move the team from the Westchester County Center to Brooklyn. It worked.

In 2024, after 28 years, one of the league’s original franchises won its first championship, at home, in a nail-biter of a game five. But the 2025 season couldn’t replicate that magic, and the reigning champs failed to make it out of the playoffs’ first round. Coach Sandy Brondello’s contract was not renewed, and Chris DeMarco came over from the NBA, where he had spent 14 years with the Golden State Warriors.

New Yorkers have made their expectations for him no secret. DeMarco is now frequently recognized on the street and told how to do his job. “A lot of fans will stop me and say, ‘Better win a championship,’” he acknowledges. “I just love the passion.”

As the WNBA season starts again, can DeMarco lead the Liberty to another trophy? Read @jazzloon’s full interview with him at the link in our bio.

Americans tend to hate airlines. But Delta isn’t like most airlines. Through a combination of tech savvy, deft marketing, and opaque loyalty programs, a company that grew out of a Georgia crop-duster operation a century ago has made itself the most unlikely of things: a lifestyle brand. Its customers aren’t just loyal. They post their boarding passes as status symbols on TikTok. They collect Delta trading cards that can go for thousands of dollars on eBay. And they obsess in online forums over how to secure access to — then not get expelled from — its elite tiers.

They also go to great lengths to avoid flying any other airline. Delta has the world’s most successful airline loyalty program, SkyMiles, with an estimated valuation of over $31 billion. Today it’s estimated that SkyMiles members have grown to over 120 million; the 360° program is estimated to have 5,000 members.

SkyMiles members are so devoted they barely flinched when Delta did something two years ago other airlines had long wished to but couldn’t: It tweaked the formula of its loyalty program to reward travelers for how much they spent instead of how many miles they traveled. This was a significant pivot for the airline industry, but it worked.

When consultant Peter Thorp got an email announcing an increase in the qualifications for his current status, he wrote a letter to Delta, saying, “‘Look, it’s your company, you get to do what you want. However, pardon my French, but don’t fucking tell me it’s a good idea to change it in a way that it’s going to be impossible for someone like me to continue at that level of status.’” Delta never responded. Still, Thorp sees himself continuing to fly Delta.

If you were dying to read the Epstein files on paper for some reason, you can now save yourself some printer ink. A reading room containing all 3.5 million pages of records related to Jeffrey Epstein that were released by the Department of Justice opens Friday in a Tribeca gallery. (You have to RSVP for the address, it seems.) The by-appointment-only pop-up is being put on by a nonprofit called the Institute for Primary Facts and will also include a timeline of Epstein and Donald Trump’s relationship. Thusly named the Donald J. Trump and Jeffrey Epstein Memorial Reading Room, the project is part art installation, part museum exhibit, and part cursed archive where the only reading materials are emails to and from Jeffrey Epstein.
