Get ready for the first concert of the Norwich Phil's 2026 season!

Glinka, Prokofiev and Rachmaninov
Sat 14 February 2026, 7:30pm
Norfolk Events Centre – Venue details

Alexander Ullman – piano
Norwich Philharmonic Orchestra
conducted by Matthew Andrews

In our February concert we feature one of the young soloists who has most impressed us in recent seasons, Alexander Ullman. We were lucky to engage him before he went on to win the Liszt International Piano Competition in 2017 and he has since played two Rachmaninov concertos with us – the 2nd and the 3rd. We also accompanied him in a special run-through of Liszt’s Piano Concertos 1 and 2 prior to his recording of those works with the BBC SO released in 2022. This time he plays another mighty Russian piano concerto, Prokofiev’s 3rd, a work that calls for extraordinary fireworks and drama from piano and orchestra alike.

The other main work is Rachmaninov’s youthful First Symphony. Although it’s been eclipsed by his later symphonies, older listeners will recognise its final movement, used as the theme tune for BBC Panorama programme in the 1960s. Like all Rachmaninov, a wonderful work to listen to and enjoy.
Glink’s sparkling Overture to Ruslan and Ludmila opens the concert.

Tickets priced from £26 to £15 (£13 to £8 for sutdents/under 26) are available online at www.ticketsource.co.uk/norwichphil

The Norwich Philharmonic Orchestra’s next concert at the Norfolk Events Centre this Saturday 6th of December, features Norwich-bred cellist, Thomas Isaac, as soloist in Dvorak’s glorious Cello Concerto.

The Cello Concerto sees Dvorak at his tuneful best with brilliant writing for both solo cello and accompanying orchestra.

Tom says: “I have loved Dvorak’s Cello Concerto since I was young, so performing it here in Norwich - where I grew up - feels especially meaningful. It’s a work full of nostalgia for Dvorak’s homeland Bohemia, and I can’t wait to share it with the audience! I’m thrilled to be returning home to play it with the Norwich Philharmonic, and collaborating with my friend Matt Andrews makes it all the more special.”

Tom grew up in Norfolk and, with support for his studies from the Michael Badminton Young Musicians Trust, he went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music. Following five years with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra as Co-Principal cellist, he was recently appointed Principal Cello with the Ulster Orchestra.

Under their conductor Matthew Andrews, the orchestra also play a rarely-heard masterpiece by Leos Janacek, his orchestral rhapsody, Taras Bulba, and the delightful Scherzo Fantastique by Josef Suk, Dvorak’s son-in-law, completes this all-Czech programme.

Tickets priced from £15 and £25 (£8 and £12 for under 26) are available at the link in our bio!

The incredibly talented Alison Langer will be joining us for Brahms German Requiem next Saturday. Here's what she had to say about the piece:

What’s it like to sing Brahms Requiem?

"It’s a real treat of piece to sing. It’s only one extract of the requiem but it's a really calm and tranquil melody.
As beautiful as it is to sing, it requires a lot of control as it sits in a high tessitura. However, you feel a huge sense of support from the chorus as you sing in tandem with them at points throughout the piece."

Are you looking forward to singing in Norwich Cathedral?

"I am really excited to sing in such a grand and historic place. What I love about singing in places like this, is how you can smell and feel the history in every part of the building. I like to feel as though the walls have ears and can remember the pieces that have been performed there in the past. So hopefully the cathedral will enjoy this version of the Brahms Requiem! Also, the acoustics will be incredible."

In the first half of the Norwich Phil’s first concert of its 25/26 season at Norwich Cathedral on Saturday 8th November, Matthew Andrews conducts the Norwich Philharmonic Orchestra in the Symphony No. 7 by Jean Sibelius.

Dating from 1924, it is the last symphony the famously enigmatic Finnish composer ever completed, even though he went on to live another 33 years.

Just a single movement, it is a masterpiece of concentrated symphonic form. It is also not often performed and so this is a rare opportunity to hear Sibelius’ unique Nordic soundscape, resounding beneath the wonderful soaring arches of the cathedral.
