I’m incredibly excited to announce that Places You Are Welcome is a 2026 Spirited Awards Top 10
Nominee for best cocktail and spirits publication!

This marks the second year in a row PYAW has been named in the top 10. I am so blown away by the love and support we have been receiving.

This past year has been a busy one for PYAW behind the scenes. Through the @raisethebar_mentorship program I have had the opportunity to work closely with the phenomenal @emmajanzento refresh the behind the scenes infrastructure and build out partnerships needed to ensure PYAW is sustainable long into the future.

Keep your eyes open for our forthcoming issue, More Bark More Bite, as well as a special surprise to mark this occasion.

We are so excited that the 50 Best Bars Scholarship is returning for 2026 and applications for it are open now until May 27th! We asked the 50 Best Bars Roku Scholar 2024 Calliope Draper about her experience with the program.

BA: What was your favourite part about winning the scholarship?
CD: I think overall my favourite part about the scholarship is the people. It truly opened the world up to me in such a beautiful way. I have made friends I still keep in touch with and connections that I hold dear today. The opportunities and the education were phenomenal across the board. In an industry like ours it stands true that the core still is the people you meet and the impact you can have on each other.

BA: What was your biggest learning in doing it all?
The biggest thing I learned in all of this is that there isn't an inherent difference between the bars back home and these storied bars winning awards on these lists. The biggest difference is just a level of care in everything. To operate in a bar like @maybe_sammy_sydney
you have to understand that every toy and every dance has a reason that can be tied back to the philosophy and inspiration of the bar. At @barhighfive there is nothing that is done just for the sake of doing it, everything has a reason, a process, and a distinct thought that leads into it. That to me is how places like @virtutokyo are able to build experiences of luxury, its cohesion, a full encompassing experience and performance. You can't break that continuity of experience or else guests will lose immersion.

3) What would you recommend to anyone applying to it?
This is a competition about more than just making a good drink. What do you want to see in our industry? How would you shape and change hospitality if you were given the chance and the tools? All three of us Scholarship alumni come from incredibly different places in the world and with incredibly different experiences. There's a reason for that. What makes you different from the industry writ large right now? Don't hide that, embrace it and build out a philosophy around it that you can use to build a better world. That's what they want from this program.

I think we can all agree the first mistake was giving me free will and a microphone

Thanks so much to Bartender Atlas for reaching out to have me as part of the Mistakes panel alongside these phenomenal fellow fuck-ups. It was so inspiring to hear y'all showcase the many different paths this industry can take us down.

Thanks to @evelynchick and the entire @simplthings.to team for making the Bisou Bisou Pop Up bar experience as seamless as possible

BRANCHING OUT EPISODE 6! On this episode of Branching Out, we speak with Calliope Draper of Montreal, Canada. We got to @non_barnary from Episode 3’s Kate Chernoff. In this episode Josh and Callie talk about transgender representation in the hospitality community, the importance of staying curious and how being familiar with systems of international political systems can help you in your bar career. Calliope then tells us about her many pillars that have propped her up in her career thus far.

Branching Out is available wherever you listen to podcasts or via the link in our profile. Like! Subscribe! Share!

Branching Out is produced by AXXN Pact in Toronto, Canada.

🗣️ In last year’s edition, we talked about inclusion through visual language — with @non_barnary from @placesyouarewelcomezine joining us straight from Canada.

In her talk, Calliope explored how everyday details in bars — from gluten-free options to gender-neutral washrooms — quietly communicate who feels welcome and who doesn’t. She connected dietary needs, body diversity, accessibility, and representation to the way spaces speak without words.

A reminder that when you care about one side of inclusion, you start caring across the board — and that visual language shapes who belongs.

Our next mentee, CALLIOPE DRAPER @non_barnary, has dedicated herself to building a brighter and more inclusive hospitality sector. ✨🙌🏽

As the first transgender person to win a global cocktail competition, she has traveled the world on a mission to change the way we think about inclusivity and the political power of bars. In 2024 she founded Places You Are Welcome, a Spirited Award nominated cocktail-zine devoted to spotlighting queer stories and excellence across the hospitality industry. Outside of work she is an avid birder, record collector, and new wave coffee enthusiast.

Calliope’s mentor is EMMA JANZEN @emmajanzen, an intrepid traveler and drinks journalist with a photography problem. She is the author of Mezcal: The History, Craft & Cocktails of the World’s Ultimate Artisanal Spirit and the co author of three James Beard Award winning books: The Way of the Cocktail with Julia Momosé, The Bartender’s Manifesto with Toby Maloney, and The Bartender’s Pantry with Jim Meehan. 🏆🏆🏆

She currently serves as an agave spirits judge for the New Orleans Spirits Competition and the Agavos Awards, and has been included in the Drinks International Bar World 100, the annual list of the industry’s most influential people, since 2023. She splits her time between home in the Midwest and the world’s coolest barstools.

Thats a wrap on the single busiest year of my life to date. 33 Flights, 59,000 air miles (1/3rd of taylor swift) countless new friends, old friends, new beginnings and sad goodbyes
if the massive change between 2024 and 2025 is anything to go off of am terrified of how busy and wonderful 2026 will be. To all my friends, foes, freaks and family, thank you for what truly has been the best year of my life.

I couldn't have asked for a better night to use the last of my genuine certified DOP @maybe_sammy_sydney bubble fluid

Thank you to @50bestbars @ediblewomen @j.ong and @callmealhk for bringing together the three of us at last!

Having entered the scholarship every year since it was founded (until now) I followed @drewfleming00 and @apoorvvaaaa and both of their incredible journeys. I can say I was very much fangirling getting to share the bar and share time in Hong Kong with them both. Thank you for letting me terrorize you both with bubbles

Let's do this all again soon 🫧🫧🫧

Almost a year ago I was a sloppy sobbing mess in Madrid next to two of the kindest and passionate people I had ever met, @kartika.kallianpur @keeley_mca.

This past year has been a whirlwind, from circumnavigating the globe to moving across Canada. But of the many cherished memories from this year, the time the three of us spent in Madrid is forever a standout for me.

You both continue to inspire me with all of the wonderous things you continue to accomplish. Although the three of us are spread all across the world at the moment, the beauty and chaos of Hong Kong only further remind me of the undeniable impact our time together had.

Love you both

My beaver like instincts drive me to running water but apparently I'm not allowed to "build any more dams" in the "botanical gardens" because I'm a "danger to those around me" and I'm "not welcome back anymore." But guess who knows where the government hides all the good sticks? This gal
