2 and a half years ago, @haleeah and I packed up our lives, sold off a large majority of our possessions and moved across the Atlantic in pursuit of a dream, specifically my dream to have a career in music.
What followed have been some of the most challenging and rewarding times in my life, and I’m incredibly grateful to have had Halea by my side through it all.
In order for her to join me in France, I could not sponsor her on my student visa — she had to pave her own way and establish herself as an auto-entrepreneur. Having moved in September, the holiday season was right around the corner, and that first Thanksgiving here, she took the opportunity to demonstrate her decoration and hosting abilities through crafting our Thanksgiving table scape on a budget and recruiting me to document the process.
I took hundreds of photos and probably close to a half hour of video —capturing everything from setting the table to placing the meal. Straight away, we edited and used a few of the photos on her website and socials, but the footage stood unused for nearly a year.
Finally, in October 2024, I was able to sit down and edit together a video capturing her work for that first Riviera Thanksgiving.
And what’s a film composition student to do but compose original music for the video? So, that’s what I did — and the video, which lives on her website (link in the comments) is the result of that work.
I was perfectly content to let that be the end of the line for that music, until one day last summer Halea casually mentioned that I should publish it.
Which brings us to today.
What better day than Valentine’s Day, and the anniversary of our first (not a) date, to finally release it?
So, that’s what I’ve done — the track, which I titled “Remerciement (VI-VII)” is my small way to acknowledge the last 2+ years in which Halea has stood beside me, cheered me on, offered feedback and new perspectives, and been my ever-present companion.
Halea, I’m immensely grateful to you. Thank you for your trust, your support, and your love. Thanks for getting coffee with me 12 years ago and sticking with me ever since. I love you. ♥️

vitamin sea
//
quick snap from a much needed excursion to go work in the sun

I woke up this morning and observed with frustration and despair the news I feared the most.
I cannot wrap my head around why so many people, especially so many people who raised me to value love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control, want to live in the America which Trump has promised to build.
My concern is not for people like me, my concern is for my friends who cannot be themselves around their families, my concern is for my friends who will face more belligerent hatred simply because of their skin color, my concern is for my friends who are handicapped living in a country where the leader openly mocks their situation instead of empathetically offering them a hand up. My concern is the license his presence in office gives to hatred, fear-mongering, and division.
I hope and pray that his term as president is not as bad as I fear, as bad as it is projected to be. But, I do not believe it is good when someone who has so openly opposed free speech, democracy, safety and autonomy is celebrated, given authority and power, and chosen to be our representative to the world. It is not good when that same person shares mutual admiration for the world’s dictators and shows little regard for those who remain powerless against poverty, discrimination, and violence.
I’m tired. I’m disappointed. I feel bewildered and betrayed. But, I will never give up trying to make the parts of the world I can touch a little brighter and peoples’ burdens a little lighter.
