🌸 BALLARAT BEGONIA FESTIVAL🌸

It was an honour to design the Ballarat Begonia Letters, sitting pretty at the corner of Sturt & Doveton Streets! Each letter celebrates a different native Wadawurrung plant and their deep cultural connections to Country.
💚 B – River Red Gum
Traditionally used for shields and canoes, with leaves used to smoke eels and possums.
🩷 E – Milkmaids
Starchy tuberous roots traditionally cooked and eaten.
💛 G – Bulbine Lily
Sweet edible tubers, sometimes called a “native leek” for its mild onion flavour.
❤️ O – Cherry Ballart
Bright red fruits enjoyed as traditional food, with foliage used in cultural smoking ceremonies.
💚 N – Austral Grass Tree
A powerhouse plant — food from its roots and nectar, resin used as adhesive, and stems crafted into spears and fire sticks.
💛 I – Golden Wattle
Wattle gum traditionally eaten, while fibres are used to make string for weaving baskets and bags.
🩷 A – Slender Bindweed
Starchy roots traditionally gathered as a food source.

A beautiful reminder that the plants around us hold stories, knowledge and connection to Country 🍀
