May 4th, 1970: Ohio’s National Guard shot live ammo at a crowd of unarmed students, murdering four and injuring several more. I wasn’t born yet, but John Filo’s photo of Jeff Miller’s very lifeless body lying facedown amidst his peers flashes burn in front of my eyes before you can say “Kent State.” How about you?
So, what happened after the Kent State Massacre? Well, Nixon continued the War in Vietnam, Kissinger sullied Cambodia with warcrimes, and zero people got guilty verdicts for murdering Jeff Miller and the others on May 4th, 1970. But Neil Young wrote a song about it. And someone made this poster. Then George Lucas made a movie about a ragtag group of rebels fighting against an empire. And now fans of that movie honor this day by saying “May the Fourth be with you” while ICE agents reenact Kent State Massacres in our streets and homes, and our shell of a White House replays what it did to Indochina everywhere else in the world. And now you’re reading this and will maybe think of Jeff Miller and the real ragtag rebels out there and what they’re fighting and dying for every time you hear “May the Fourth be with you.” Always.

FASCIST GROOVE evolved at Studio 34 when Janine Renee Cunningham brought her ideas to Mason Rosenthal’s Make/Show workshops for a punk rock performance lecture about the rise and demise of Margaret Thatcher. Matt O’Hare came aboard to develop original songs for the show, and things clicked into place. Here we see an early version of one song with Janine and Matt premiering in our Lounge in advance of Fascist Groove’s debut at the 2025 Philly Fringe. The show was 𝙎𝙊 𝙂𝙊𝙊𝘿 that we nudged them to bring it back for Philly Theatre Week. Opting for just 2 shows in the intimate confines of Studio B, Fascist Groove might (ironically) sell out, so get your tickets now!

For many Philly theatergoers, the phrase “solo show” is synonymous with Chris Davis. Best known for one-man adaptations of 𝘼𝙥𝙤𝙘𝙖𝙡𝙮𝙥𝙨𝙚 𝙉𝙤𝙬 and
𝙉𝙪𝙩𝙘𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙠𝙚𝙧, Chris is a seasoned Fringe performer, often running marathon months of twice-a-night shows in Edinburgh just like the early Beatles cutting their chops in Hamburg’s redlight district back in ‘61. But a wee bit older and a lot more sober, 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝟰𝟬-𝗬𝗘𝗔𝗥-𝗢𝗟𝗗 𝗕𝗔𝗟𝗟𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗡𝗢 puts Chris Davis in recovery mode, swapping his bad habits out for a midlife obsession with ballet.
The 40-Year-Old Ballerino debuted to a sold-out run at Philly’s 2024 Fringe and will make its Edinburgh premiere this summer. These two Saturdays for Philly Theatre Week will be our city’s only chance to see this version of Ballerino
before the Scots have at it. Do not miss!

It’s amazing to survey the last century of stand-up comedy to see how it’s evolved. Every comic who became a household name—the ones that star in movies, guest on latenite TV, or get their own comedy specials—all got their starts in bars and comedy clubs. But how many can claim a yoga studio as their old stomping ground? Aaron Bell is among the few, and he’s cultivating a cohort of select comics who are along on that ride.
𝙎𝙏𝘼𝙉𝘿-𝙐𝙋 𝘼𝙏 𝙏𝙃𝙀 𝙎𝙏𝙐𝘿𝙄𝙊 is one of Philly’s few sober comedy events, and that maybe means that the comedians here have to be funnier-than-average—and they are! Nearly 100 people packed into our Lounge to see Aaron’s birthday Stan-Up at the Studio Special for the Philly Fringe Festival last fall, proving that sober comedy has a strong audience in West Philly. Nonetheless, for those who aren’t quite sure that they can partake in stand-up outside the pub, we’ve got you covered: Nutmeg Presents will be offering a pop-up mocktail bar serving NA beers and mixed drinks for your enjoyment!

When punk sparked in the early 70s, a lot of it was fairly apolitical. Then, Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan came into power, and punk reorganized itself into a largely anti-fascist project. The first song to rage against the transatlantic right-wing and Thatcher’s call to “Make Britain great again” was “We Don’t Need This Fascist Groove Thang” by Heaven 17, which the BBC banned and now serves as a title for this show.
𝙁𝘼𝙎𝘾𝙄𝙎𝙏 𝙂𝙍𝙊𝙊𝙑𝙀 is equal parts performative lecture, avant-garde theatre, and punk rock gig. Co-presentors Janine Renee Cunningham and Matt O’Hare deliver a twin narrative on the rise of Thatcher and the punk counterculture along with archival footage and unruly reenactments. The show’s catchiest highlight is its soundtrack of original songs, performed live and loud by Matt and Janine, all written for the show in the spirit of decades past, plus one stunning cover song that asks poignant questions about this present moment as we face fascism like we’ve never seen it in our lifetimes.
NOTE: 𝙁𝘼𝙎𝘾𝙄𝙎𝙏 𝙂𝙍𝙊𝙊𝙑𝙀 has limited seating, so get your tickets now!
