In Conversation with Victoria Donovan:
“Everything for Everybody: Precarious Archives and Art Activism in Ukraine”

Hi everyone,
we are happy to announce that on Wednesday, 4th February, we will be supporting Victoria Donovan’s talk about her experience of hosting an exhibition at the Kyiv Biennial.

The exhibition was co-curated by Kateryna Rusetska and Natasha Chychasova and is currently on display at the Dnipro Center for Contemporary Culture.

It explores precarious archives and alternative/radical archival practices that emerge under conditions of extreme violence and war. The project originated from research funded by the British Council, which brought into dialogue two archives from Scotland and Ukraine: those of queer feminist photographer Franki Raffles and Donbas photojournalist Mykola Bilokon. These photo archives document a unique record of working-class life, gendered labour, and social transformation in late Soviet Ukraine and the wider region.

We are also happy to announce that Natasha Chychasova (co-curator) will be joining the event online.

To learn more about this work, join us on 4th February at 4:00 pm

🗂️ Upcoming lecture in our UKRAINE LECTURE SERIES at the European University Viadrina:

👉 Victoria Donovan
Professor of Ukrainian and East European Studies, University of St Andrews

Everything for Everybody: Archival Resilience in Wartime Ukraine

📅 Tuesday, 20 January 2026 | 11:00 a.m.
📍 European University Viadrina, GD HS 08 (Gräfin-Dönhoff Building),
Europaplatz 1, 15230 Frankfurt (Oder)
🔗 To join online, please follow the Zoom link in bio.

This lecture explores the role of archives during wartime. Drawing on the exhibition Everything for Everybody (Kyiv Biennale 2025), currently on display at the Dnipro Center for Contemporary Culture, the talk reflects on archives as fragile yet powerful witnesses to social life under threat.

The exhibition brings together two photographic archives from the UK and Ukraine: the Franki Raffles Photography Collection at the University of St Andrews and the Mykola Bilokon archive from the Pokrovsk Historical Museum.

Set against the realities of war, the lecture addresses the vulnerability of archives at a moment when institutions such as the Pokrovsk Historical Museum have been evacuated and entire cities are increasingly reduced to ruins. In this context, Everything for Everybody becomes both a promise and a provocation—asking whose stories are being preserved today, and for whom.

About the speaker:
Victoria Donovan is Professor of Ukrainian and East European Studies at the University of St Andrews, holding Scotland’s first Chair in Ukrainian Studies. She is Director of the Centre for Global (Post)socialisms and the author of Life in Spite of Everything: Tales from the Ukrainian East (2025).Her research focuses on archives, heritage, and industrial and community memory in eastern Ukraine, including open-access projects such as Un/archiving Post/industry and Mariupol Memory Park.

In cooperation with @european_newschool and the Project @war_sensing

Supported by @daad_worldwide with funds from the Federal Foreign Office (AA).

Spent a cat-themed birthday in magical Vilnius this year filled with thoughts on waste and militarisation, protest and historical reenactment, encounters with brilliant colleagues and postmodern frescoes, and some of the best food and drink I've ever tried. Feel very lucky to have a life so rich with impressions, stimulation, and sensations. And also lucky that no-one thought to send balloons for my birthday!

With huge thanks to Egle Rindzeviciute and Marija Dremaite at the Center for (Post)authoritarian Landscapes @vilniusuniversity and @cacvilnius for the invitations to speak and your warm hospitality.

Pristatome diskusijos dalyves 👇

📢 Fundraiser announcement for our #meettheneighbours event on July 20. 🇺🇦❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

We are very happy to be supporting the vital work of @kharpproject, in collaboration with @constructionfestival, to repair homes and support communities in eastern Ukraine.

Tickets for "Life in Spite of Everything: Songs and Stories from Ukraine with Victoria Donovan (@monotown ) and Michael Alpert" are *FREE* (and going fast🔥 - link in bio). At the event we'll be collecting donations by cash or card for KHARPP and Construction Festival's work in Novopavlivka.

Novopavlivka is a village in the east of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast that, until recently, seemed distant from the war. Following the intensification of the Russian offensive in Donetsk region, it has become a frontline settlement—already heavily damaged by guided aerial bombs and under constant threat from FPV drones.

Some local residents are investing all their savings in purchasing homes in relatively safer regions of Ukraine. Often, those who make this decision are the ones most in need of stable solutions: people with disabilities, large families, and owners of farm or domestic animals.

Such houses cost up to €10,000 and are usually in a neglected condition, lacking running water, heating systems, and functional bathrooms. Over the past few months, KHARPP — an organization that has been helping to repair houses in frontline areas for over two years — has focused on repairing exactly these kinds of homes.

Assistance under this program is available only to those who have managed to purchase at least some form of housing on their own. Still, most people from Novopavlivka cannot afford even the cheapest property, and even in the most difficult circumstances, they are forced to rent.

KHARPP and Construction festival are fundraising to purchase and renovate a home for a family from Novopavlivka, to enable them to move to a safer place. We are grateful for the opportunity to support this vital work at @cupararts.

Grab your free ticket and join us at Monimail on July 20.

Teurastamo (meaning 'abattoir', a reference the site's former use) is a nice example of post-industrial adaptation in Helsinki. As well as the usual gentrification -the distilleries, restaurants and coffee roasters- it's kept true to its original identity with local butchers trading from the complex.

Rather than pricing locals out, Teurastamo includes a yard where people can barbecue for free all year round, and hosts loads for free events like picnics, farmers markets and flea markets. A few years ago the LGBTQ nightclub DTM also moved in 😍

Visited beautiful and profound "Rare Earth" exhibition by Nina Sikkersoq (Kalaallit Nunaat/Greenland) @kohtataidehalli today.

"A dancer, photographic artist and political activist, and currently one of the more than 18,000 Greenlanders living and working in Denmark, with which autonomous Kalaallit Nunaat is connected as part of the ‘Unity of the Realm’, Sikkersoq uses the camera to take a stance. Her imagery can be understood politically, as a contribution to raising awareness of colonial realities in the past and the present – and in a variety of possible futures – but also as a visual articulation, in its own right, of her being-in-the-world."

Looking forward to speaking at Waterstones Bath next week about my book Life In Spite of Everything:Tales from the Ukrainian East.

Life in Spite of Everything is a very personal history of Ukraine's east and a celebration of its people's tenacity, creativity and independence. It is a history on foot of the many beautiful and historically rich places that are now being destroyed by Russia's war.

The book has received lovely reviews so far including from Andrey Kurkov who writes in The Observer: "War is not central to this work. It is a story of people and nature, filled with sweet and bitter memories, empathy and hope" and from Serhii Plokhy who writes, "Victoria Donovan writes...with love knowledge and care. Written about humans for humans, this book exposes the inhumanity of imperial ambitions and colonial wars like no other work on the subject".

Join us for this conversation on 28 May at 7pm!

Tickets £5 general admission and £25 with the book!
