I made this quilt while reminiscing on my changing relationship to a tree from my childhood. I used to fear our front yard, littered with spiky chestnut hulls that would stab my bare feet in the early autumn. I resented the temporary loss of a space for playing outdoors. I didn’t know how precious a gift a mature chestnut tree was until I was older, learning about indigenous foodways, and about my own duty to our Home. Now I feel grateful for our chestnut tree, and my fear has transformed into the kind you feel when you never want to lose something.
