Through her large scale installations, Megan Mueller reorients the viewer’s relationship to public space. She brings the outdoors inside and moves the ground to the wall, making it the center of attention.

Megan creates these installations by scanning decorative terrazzo sidewalks she finds throughout Los Angeles with a flatbed scanner. She prints the scanned images at scale and reconstructs them to create a life-size reproduction.

The installations included in Within Reach document three different entrances to Wilshire Tower, a nine-story building on the Miracle Mile in Los Angeles. When it opened in March of 1929, the building housed two department stores. The name of one, Desmond’s, still graces the building’s entrance, a reminder of a moment of capitalist optimism before the 1929 financial crash.

See Megan’s work on view as part of Withjn Reach and join us for an artist talk in Sunday, May 24 at 1pm to hear Megan and the other artists discuss their work. The exhibition closes Sunday, so it’s also your last chance to see the exhibition!

In celebration of their exhibition, PAU S. PESCADOR: WORKING now on view at @mocaarlington, homeLA // Rose Hills alumni Pau Pescador takes us into their studio, here, in Lincoln Heights, to discuss the works in this show and the creative process behind it.

From the exhibition website: The artwork Working explores the experience of transgender individuals working for the federal government through a single-channel video incorporating animation, found and created footage, and voiceover audio. The photography installation Pigment and Ink examines portraiture and its depictions of identity in cultural institutions. Throughout the exhibition, Pescador explores the ways that social categories like gender, sexuality, and race inform and shape understandings of public service and national identity.

Blair again! It’s great to be in New York for art week and also really nice to take a break from all the buzz and energy of the fairs to spend time with amazing work in a quieter setting.

I was really glad I got to visit a pop-up exhibition of work by Rose Nestler and Cece Philips put on by @public.gallery. Rose’s work was in Applied Forces at MoCA Arlington in 2020 and it was great to see her more recent work!

@dita_jironmurphy and I set the tone for our trip by starting out with a visit to artist Jill Magid’s exhibition Pooler Room @misterfahrenheitny which is in what was once an indoor pool on the lower level of a West Village townhouse. I’ve been a fan of Magid’s heavily research-based practice for a long time, so it was great to get to see the show during one of the musical performances.

Want to see more pics from fairs, museums, and galleries I visited during my trip? Follow me @blair.e.murphy

Saskia Fleishman (@flesh___man) is showing @galleriurbane and @markjoshuaepstein’s work is on view with @asyageisberggallery. Saskia and Mark exhibited in Stretched at MoCA Arlington in 2021 (can’t believe it was that long ago!) And César López (@youngbauhaus) is at the fair with @gallerybogart, a great gallery in Kansas City. César’s work was included in Assembly 2024: Horizon Scanning.

Good morning from New York! This is Blair Murphy, MoCA Arlington’s senior curator. A few MoCA Arlington staff are in New York this week for art week. We’ll be posting a bit about what we’re checking out!

I was so thrilled to stop by @tinakimgallery to see an exhibition of work by Pacita Abad. Pacita was on our board in the late 80s and early 90s. She lived in DC for many years, studied at the Corcoran, held residencies @pyramidatlantic, and had a groundbreaking solo show @womeninthearts, so her DMV connections are strong!

It was a real joy to see her work in person for the first time!
