Now open | Euan Uglow: An Arc from the Eye (Until 31 May 2026)

Exhibition announcement ✨
We are delighted to be opening Euan Uglow: An Arc from the Eye on Saturday 14 February
Euan Uglow (1932 – 2000) was one of Britain’s most significant 20th century painters. He was best known for his large-scale nudes, but he also made landscapes in the summer light of the Mediterranean and still lifes, taking up the challenge of painting materials such as plastic, as well as organic material in gradual decay, such as fruit.
Curated by Catherine Lampert, the exhibition features over 40 of Uglow’s most ambitious paintings, as well as drawings and examples of work by his artistic influences, Paul Cézanne and Alberto Giacometti, and his former tutors at Camberwell School of Art, William Coldstream, Victor Pasmore and Claude Rogers.
This will be first solo exhibition of Uglow’s work at a UK public institution in 20 years, and we cannot wait to welcome you into the galleries next month.
For now, our café, cinema and shop remain open Tuesday – Sunday, 10am-5pm

“You always read pictures from the left, but the point about The Diagonal is that you’re forced to read it from the right.” Euan Uglow
Paintings like The Diagonal exemplify Uglow’s meticulous attention to precise measurements in his work. Behind the model, Uglow drew fine lines running parallel to the model’s outstretched body – lines which also appear in the painting.
The angle of the model’s position required similar precision from the sitter. When Suzy King, the first model, dropped out after six weeks, she was replaced by Jacque Rochester, an American student at the Slade. In total, the painting took six years to complete, with Rochester sitting for regular sessions during term time in London.

Opening soon: Jaques Henri Lartigue: Life in Colour 📸
Jacques Henri Lartigue (1894–1986) was a photographer celebrated for his black-and-white photographs of Belle Époque Paris, capturing elegance, speed and modern life; from car racing and aviation to the French Riviera and travels to the United States. Though long overlooked, his work gained international recognition with a landmark MoMA exhibition in 1963, establishing him as a pioneer of instantaneous photography.
This exhibition, the first UK public presentation of Lartigue’s work in over a decade, focuses on his little-known colour photography. Featuring over 150 works, the exhibition traces his career from childhood drawings to fashion photography and late abstractions.
Exhibition organised in collaboration with the Association des Amis de Jacques Henri Lartigue, Ministère de la Culture, France and diChroma photography.

In 1969, the Ghanian artist, activist and cultural leader Marigold Akufo-Addo modelled for Euan Uglow.
Akufo-Addo studied at the Slade School of Art between 1968-71 before returning to Ghana to launch the Lamra Studios and Gallery in 1975. To this day, she remains an advocate and supports the arts.
In Marigold, Uglow’s line marks are visible against the black background, highlighting how he played close attention to depicting the model in profile.

Euan Uglow spent many summers visiting the Mediterranean ☀
During these trips, he usually painted several landscape paintings – marking a shift in pace from the much lengthier periods spent on completing paintings in his London studio.
