ANNOUNCING Philly In Eynem (Philly all together) a night of Yiddish Learning, Creativity and Community, coming very soon to Kol Tzedek Synagogue in West Philly! Hot off the heels of our emerging scene’s media debut last month on WHYY, I and many of my West Philly Yiddish Culture co conspirators invite you to join us for a heymish evening celebrating all things Yiddish! We’re announcing it very close to the actual event date on May 17th, and we’re hoping you’ll register (link in bio) and join us! You don’t even have to be from Philly to come! Just look at this amazing flyer by @_feygele_

If you’ve ever been curious about klezmer music or Yiddish culture this is the perfect place to start! We’ll have workshops on Yiddish Language, klezmer music, Yiddish art, a filmabout Jewish resistance in the Holocaust, and of course, lots of joyous sound and dancing. Inspired by the peer-led teaching and community building of @shtetl_philly, Philly Yid, the recent community theater productions of the Dybbuk and Fidler Afn Dakh, I am bringing together a whole bunch of these incredibly knowledgeable and dedicated people to share our love and our passions with you.

Last year, Kol Tzedek (where I lead the inimitable Simcha Band) and I were awarded a grant from the National Yiddish Book Center’s Yiddish Arts And Culture for Jewish Communities program. In January, we gathered a bunch of the folks making Yiddish culture and growing new communities around it in West Philly and Beyond for a chat that is available on the Radiant Others Klezmer Podcast. Now we are sharing our love for the sounds, movements, histories and more of this culture with you.

What is happening with our beloved music and culture in West Philly (and throughout the city) today is amazinng and unprecedented in my decades of experience playing, teaching, and organizing. The opportunity to build or discover a home for yourself in this culture, this world, right here at in our home is greater than its ever been. Please, join us with your excitement and your koyekh (spirit).

Registration link in my bio. Zayt gezunt and see you there!

Wednesday Night Dance Improvisation Performance Practice with Rotating Teachers
Miryam Coppersmith leads Wednesday, April 15, 2026 6:30-8:30pm
at Headlong/Mascher Space, 1170 S. Broad St. Philadelphia, PA 19146
@mascher.space @miryam.moves

Voice Body Space Time

“Art is how we decorate space, music is how we decorate time.” —Jean-Michel Basquiat

In this class, we’ll decorate space and time by improvising with our bodies and voices. For me, engaging voice and movement brings my whole self to the composition. We’ll open pathways for compositional ideas to travel freely between the voice and the movement, transforming and surprising us as they do. We’ll allow the voice to explore, communicate, create texture, and notice how the body responds when allowed to vibrate with sound. Sound-making can be very individual, so by making compositions together, we’ll explore the edges of creating sound in ensemble as well.

Miryam Coppersmith (she/they) is a Philadelphia-based performance artist, writer, and educator who aims to create spaces for transformation for her collaborators, audience, and greater community. She creates with movement, speech, and sound coming from her body, drawing on training in Contact Improvisation, Six Viewpoints, theater, song, Black American social dance, and Yiddish dance. Miryam's solo dance/theater piece Mirele Lernt Zich Yiddish (2023) was hailed a "must-see performance" by The Dance Journal. She has performed with the Six Viewpoints Institute, Vervet Dance, Olivia Brown, Janna Meiring, and others. She is the Director of local performance journal thINKingDANCE.net. miryamcoppersmith.com

$5-25 sliding scale ($15 suggested), cash or Venmo, NOTAFLOF
Pre-registration NOT required
Please ring the "Rear Studio" buzzer to be let into the building

Come see (and hear) the outstanding Miryam Coppersmith in creative action in Vervet Dance's "Semi-Composed," on Saturday, March 28!

Miryam will be performing in Be[  ]ing and Render, both directed by Loren Groenendaal. This photo shows Miryam and Vervet Dance director Loren together in the last semi-composed performance which had the theme of Chaos/Order from 2023. Miryam and I can bring out trickster like humor in each other, which I think will bring an extra layer of fun and complexity to my work "Render" in which, like all improvisation, we are making while performing, but I'm this case, we're also commenting on the making as we are making, which is part of the making. Movement and Text. Meta. Nerdy. Fun.- just like Loren & Miryam.  Be[  ]ing will also allow for our playful spirits to romp, but may also take a more subtle somatic sensitivity for the contact improvisation based partnering that will likely emerge.

The show is at fidget @thefidget_space (1714 N. Mascher St. Philadelphia, PA 19122) and doors open at 7:30 for the show that starts at 8:00 and ends by 9:15pm.

Tickets are sliding scale $5-30 available at link in @vervetdance bio and at the door.

Improvisation Performance Practice with Rotating Teachers
Miryam Coppersmith is leading Wednesday, November 12, 2025 6:30-8:30pm
at Headlong/Mascher Space, 1170 S. Broad St. Philadelphia, PA 19146

She has performed with the Six Viewpoints Institute, Vervet Dance, Olivia Brown, Janna Meiring, and others. She is the Director of local performance journal thINKingDANCE.net. miryamcoppersmith.com

Presence and Performance

This class will focus on presence and emotion as your ever present collaborators, more than just tools in the improviser's tool kit. We will warm up our bodies as well as our porousness to the world around us, taking in and communicating out information with our whole selves. We may: witness and allow ourselves to be witnessed, play with gaze, experience different movement states, explore emotion as a response to stimulus and a driver of impulses. This work is deeply inspired by Mary Overlie's Six Viewpoints as well as drawing from other sources.

$0-25 sliding scale ($15 suggested), cash or Venmo.
Pre-registration NOT required
Please ring the "Rear Studio" buzzer to be let into the building
Mask optional
