Michael Rikio Ming Hee Ho reflects on how language, memory, and belonging settle into a private archive, where late-night notes, shaped canvases, and trompe-l’œil forms hold nostalgia, displacement, and the quiet consolations that remain. Watch Michael speak about the ideas and process behind the works.

Visit 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙄 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙙𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙡𝙮 at HART HAUS, on view until June 4.

a new text install work of mine is on view now @gallery2 in collaboration with @sangheeut in Jeju, South Korea!

I saved this poem for a while, specifically for it to be a site specific install work with @sangheeut. I love that it's finally in the universe and on an island of all places.

HART HAUS presents 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘐 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘭𝘺, a solo exhibition by 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗲𝗹 𝗥𝗶𝗸𝗶𝗼 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗛𝗲𝗲 𝗛𝗼 (@michaelho_official), concluding his residency.

Featuring a new body of work, Ho interweaves poetry, text, and painting to explore memory, nostalgia, and identity. His text-fragments read like intimate “notes to self,” where comfort, anxiety, and quiet longing coexist. From Hawaiʻi to Tokyo and Hong Kong Ho treats language as material, his language unfolds through a tactile relationship with words. He creates emotionally charged spaces between thought and inner dialogue, where “home” becomes a story we tell to remain whole.

@michaelho_official

February to April 2026

During his residency at HART HAUS from February to April 2026, 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗲𝗹 𝗥𝗶𝗸𝗶𝗼 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗛𝗲𝗲 𝗛𝗼 was deeply immersed in the studio, Michael actively exchanged ideas with fellow artists, embracing dialogue and feedback to develop new works for his Hong Kong-inspired solo exhibition. Working across language, collage, and trompe-l’œil painting, his practice reflects on identity, memory, and emotional distance. Time spent in Sheung Wan and Kennedy Town transformed small urban details into sources of familiarity and quiet nostalgia, subtly shaping his evolving body of work.

To conclude his residency, Michael will present his solo exhibition 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘐 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘭𝘺, featuring a compelling new series that weaves poetry, text, and painting to explore nostalgia, memory, and identity. On view from May 9 to June 4 at HART HAUS 3/F.

𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗲𝗹 𝗥𝗶𝗸𝗶𝗼 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗛𝗲𝗲 𝗛𝗼 (b. 1996, Kamuela, Hawaiʻi) is a Japanese and Cantonese American artist based in Tokyo. His practice utilizes a coordinated system of language, collage logic, and trompe-l’œil painting to examine the mechanisms of emotional insulation and the performative nature of selfhood in a post-social-media landscape.

Developed in response to the compressed urban scale of Tokyo, Ho’s works often take the shape of trompe-l’œil box forms. These structures function as surrogates for the body, asserting a physical presence through posture, leaning or tilting to mimic the dynamics of a conversation. The surfaces of these forms act as archival sites where familiar and nostalgic imagery, personal ephemera, and linguistic ruminations accumulate.

By layering text that mirrors the cadence of unsent late-night messages and internal monologues, Ho explores a contemporary condition defined by an
oscillation, between wry optimism and self-aware insecurity. The performance of identity in his work serves both as a critique of a compulsive self-categorization and as a symptom of cultural dislocation.

Fragment is thrilled to present Michael Rikio Ming Hee Ho’s first New York solo exhibition. Ho is a Japanese and Cantonese American artist raised on Hawaiʻi Island. He studied at UCLA before relocating to Tokyo.

Opening: February 4, 6–8 pm
Show dates: February 5–28, 2026

In ‘now that i look back it was all falling apart but the pieces were all there,’ Michael Rikio Ming Hee Ho’s newest body of work operates as a coordinated system of references, a visual and linguistic lexicon built from the unresolved tensions of belonging. Rooted in the polyethnic, creole culture of Hawai‘i, Ho navigates an identity inherited through cultural remnants that are felt but never fully claimed. The work satires, while also moving beyond, the orientalized, picturesque tropes of the islands to confront a post-social media condition defined by a pervasive insecurity and a compulsive need for self-categorization. But what emerges through imagery and language departs from what may initially read as Ho’s biographical narrative of home. Rather, it’s a constellation of memory, not strictly that of Ho, but the core infrastructure of memory itself. Archival scraps, local ephemera, and intimate confessions operate symbiotically. Each one incomplete on its own, but together creating an emotional atmosphere that feels romantically familiar.
