Plant of the Week: Mexican Blanket Flower (Gaillardia pulchella)

If you’ve spent any time in a Texas wildflower garden, you’ve likely crossed paths with this vibrant beauty. Mexican Blanket Flower shows up early in the season, bringing bold color when the garden is just waking up.

With fiery red and golden yellow blooms, this sun-loving wildflower thrives where others struggle in poor soil, full heat, and minimal water. Easy to grow, wildly resilient, and full of personality.

Butterflies love it. Birds love it. And honestly… I love a plant that doesn’t need to be fussed over to show off.

Plant it once, let it do its thing, and enjoy the show from spring through fall.

Project recap: Brentwood Front Yard Makeover

This project was all about bringing structure to chaos. Creating an intentional space that could be more easily managed by the homeowners.

Native plants, herbs and medicinals along with choice cut flowers bring new life to this space.

Plant of the Week: White Prickly Poppy (Argemone albiflora)
The White Prickly Poppy is one of those plants that stops you in your tracks, its delicate, luminous blooms floating above a body built for survival. Beneath that soft, open face is a plant armored with prickly stems, thriving where others struggle.
Native across much of the southern U.S. and found abundantly throughout Texas, it grows naturally in disturbed soils, open fields, and along roadsides, places that demand resilience. It doesn’t need perfect conditions. In fact, it prefers a little grit.
This tough annual handles part shade with ease and shows up boldly, offering nectar to bees, beetles, and other beneficial insects. It’s not commonly cultivated, which makes it feel even more special when it appears—like a quiet rebellion against overly manicured landscapes.
I chose this flower to represent my work because it holds a balance I deeply respect: strength and softness, resilience and beauty.
It doesn’t try to be anything other than what it is and it thrives because of that.

One of my favorite builds from last year.
A limestone patio installed off the primary bedroom, reclaimed brick pathways and a second gathering space help reshape this backyard with intention. There’s something timeless about giving old materials new life in this Rosedale home in Austin, TX.

It’s easy to forget how much plants elevate a space. (90% of all the plants at @paseoatxare real mind you,definetly intentional). Just a reminder to be creative not only in our crafts but also in our environments. This plays a key role in our decision making and overall mentally, In my opinion🎨🌱

Honored to be working on Revitalizing Rainey St. in downtown Austin, TX! @clivebaratx at the corner of Rainey and Davis, a hot sunny corner, was planted with tough Texas natives that aim to withstand the long summers and high traffic!
