This is a replica of an ancient instrument that goes by many names, as variations of it were created in cultures throughout the Middle East, Africa, and the Scandinavian and Baltic countries of Northern Europe.

Its most recognizable name is probably Bukkehorn, native to Norway and associated with the Vikings. Although the more docile side of Vikings, I believe these were mostly - but not exclusively - played by women who were milkmaids protecting their herd from predators.

It’s hard to accurately date this spectrum of instruments (instruments made from animal horns), some anthropologist suggest that it could be from the Neolithic Era, others have traced it’s origins to the Classical Antiquity, or even as late as the Medieval Period. Humans have been making instruments out of animal horns for thousands of years. The type of animal horn used depends on what was available: cow, goat, ram, antelope, etc.

These instruments were made with and without finger holes and, depending on the version, would be used for herding animals or scaring off predators, signaling across long distances, for rituals, celebrations, ceremonies, entertainment, or war.

The Pūtātara is a deeply sacred instrument; a cultural touchstone for the indigenous Māori people of New Zealand. It brings together sounds of the earth and the sea.

This instrument is usually made from a conch or triton shell, with a carved wooden mouthpiece and feathers from a native New Zealand bird.

Shell instruments are among the first, if not the first, labrosone instruments (lip-vibrating); possibly dating back to the Neolithic era (New Stone Age) or earlier. The Pūtātara is not quite that old - probably around 800 years old.

It is my understanding that its many sounds would be heard at rituals, celebrations, ceremonies, and signaling across long distances.

This instrument embodies the natural and otherworldly/supernatural sounds of the earth, sky, sea, and of the imagination.

Music brings me joy. The intimacy developed through organic collaboration, while shared with an audience whose attention pays witness to our collective vulnerability, transcends being present. This is magic. This is live music.

What do you miss about live music? What are you excited to experience again?

Getting down to brass tacks-reading is important. The more we learn, the more things start to slide into place.
