A year ago, I was home wandering a BJ’s when I saw this cookbook made by a man I saw one TikTok from. Nevertheless, I was curious enough to pick it up and was fascinated, intrigued, and inspired by the treats inside. My brother bought it for me as a belated birthday present and thus began my baking journey. I had always found baking comforting: some lemon cookies here, my family’s apple pie there, but never had any consistency.

But with this, I resolved to bake something every week, ideally something new. Just to see if I could do it. One year and 80 and counting recipes later, I’ve kept that promise. I’ve put mayonnaise, beets, and sauerkraut in chocolate cakes (not all at once), made cookies from cider to Tang, ice creams, breads, and finally branched out from making pies that weren’t just apple. I’ve discovered new loves, traditions, and standards (Cold Oven Cake for LYFE) that have brought so much joy.

It’s been an enriching, calming, and, most importantly, delicious year. One that’s brought me closer to people, taught me so much about the art of sweets, and reignited my curiosity. I gained confidence, a well-stocked kitchen, and a moniker: McKakes. I owe that to the amazing and astonishing recipes from @bdylanhollis and @thesweetfeminist who are geniuses and inspirations. Their books are well worth the purchase because their treats, both uncovered and invented are second to none.

I just celebrated another birthday, but this anniversary is the one that feels most important to me this year. This year was filled with a lot of ups and a lot of downs, but one thing that I learned: pain is temporary: cake is forever. Here’s to a delectable year and here’s to many more.

My God, could it be? He wrote another essay?? AFTER ALL THIS TIME? A couple months ago I finally sat down and watched Amphibia am still emotionally recovering. As a result I thought on its cartoon compatriots Gravity Falls, Owl House, Infinity Train, and Craig of the Creek and how remarkable this past generation, almost at its end, was. So, to celebrate the 2 year anniversary of Amphibia’s beautiful series finale, we celebrate the impact these shows left behind. Link in bio!!

A year ago, I made a mashup of the criminally underrated Christmas classic Christmas Evil and how it’s a better version of the overrated (yes, I said it) Joker. It is still one of my favorite things I’ve ever made, so I wanted to commemorate its anniversary with this side by side comparison to the Joker trailer just to show HOW close these two really are. The results will SHOCK you. Todd Phillips owes Lewis Jackson money.

Happy Holidays! If there’s one thing I love about this season (and really any season), is the movies. So like a quirky cinematic advent calendar, here are some of my go-to holiday movies to set the mood this month. Some old standards, some new standards, some hidden gems, there truly is something for everyone. Hope you unwrap a new tradition!

Last year, I watched Lewis Jackson’s Christmas cult favorite Christmas Evil. As it kept unraveling, I thought “This feels a lot like a Christmas version of Joker. What if I took the audio from the original Joker teaser and put the Christmas Evil footage on top of it?” So I waited a year and this is the result. Turns out, it lines up even better than I could have imagined. Don’t believe me? See for yourself! Link in bio as well. That’s right! I’m popping back in for another essay. I’ve been watching a bunch of Whodunnits in preparation for Glass Onion and found that the internet is a little liberal in its use of what a Whodunnit is. So I’ve written a genre breakdown of the Whodunnit using its best examples. Grab your spyglasses as we uncover this donut’s hole in a donut’s hole. Link in bio!

It is the great master Paul Verhoeven’s birthday today. To celebrate, I present something I’ve been working on for months.

If there’s anything I’ve learned watching all 16 of his directorial efforts, he loves two things: violence and SEX.

Ladies and gentlemen: Paul Verhoeven’s Foreplay. All the sexy bits of Verhoeven’s films without the actual sex. Link in bio!

It’s been a while, folks, but I just released a new essay! The movie musical is a beloved genre for me, but it’s been a long time since we’ve had a great movie musical. But then along came tick, tick…BOOM! which completely blew me away. So in honor of Jonathan Larson’s birthday, I had to write an essay on it comparing it to the other movie musicals of 2021 that tried, failed, or almost made the mark. Link in bio! @ticktickboom

Summer’s almost over folks! But it’s not over before I pay tribute to the ripp’r of the season. Anyone who knows me knows the only thing I love more than movies is punk. When @illuminati.hotties dropped “Pool Hopping,” earlier this summer it immediately made me think of the Burt Lancaster film “The Swimmer.” The result lays before you. So let’s celebrate the summer with one last ripp’r and existential crisis! Link in bio for the full version.

I do not own the rights to “Pool Hopping” or “The Swimmer,” but I hope illuminati hotties and Columbia Pictures can forgive me. I couldn’t resist.

No way this could’ve been done without you, @kimberleesarac . Thank you for reminding me that this was even possible and giving me the resolve to go for it. Thank you for showing me who Sadie was and could be. Thank you for always being such an open and supportive friend now and always. Just another adventure down the road for us, but not even close to the last. There is no Best Buddies without my bestest buddy of all.

Man, oh man. Thank you, @alexsgould For coming back to a place that I know you hate just for li’l ol’ me. For keeping me sane in the hardest moments. For having my back. For helping a person operate a self-service car wash just to get them out of the way as fast as possible. And, of course, for being there from day one of this and making it what it is now. That’s raw.
