My mom lost custody of me and my brother 2 years after I was born and moved back to Ohio to live with her mother, while I stayed with my dad. She earned degrees, learned to be a nurse, and made ends meet by some miracle. 11 years later, I was dropped back into her lap within a night’s notice and she welcomed us with open arms and wet eyes. She had to learn how to raise rambunctious teenagers suddenly, and she handled it by teaching us that manners, hard work and education will take you much further in life than what we saw around us. She wasn’t a perfect mom, but she was my mom, and still is. So grateful for this woman, and to be with her today to celebrate the fruits of her labor.
