“When I first presented my solo exhibition Sojourn at MAYAO in 2024, I had not returned home for nearly five years. During my time in France, although I was drifting, I felt a certain lightness.
Since returning in February 2025, as my body has truly re-entered this environment and I began to live here in a real, grounded way, everything has changed. I can no longer view my surroundings with the same playfulness as before. The texture of “life” now lands heavily on me—striking me with force, as though there is nowhere to hide, like being caught in a cloudburst while walking.
Working in this state, my practice no longer carries the same sense of “effort” or “irony” as before. Instead, I want to conceal the “energy” deep beneath the surface—to make things simpler, and simpler still, and simpler again. Life is already chaotic and complicated; I want my work to be simple.
I have begun to resent “Sojourn”. I long for stability—for a “home,” a place where I can truly settle myself.”

When “utopia” is reduced to mere refuge, these subtle presences begin to operate as allegory. In the twenty-first century, the “global village” is increasingly experienced as unraveling, giving rise to a pervasive sense of homelessness. Some are displaced, others migrate; for many, what changes is the meaning of “home.”
In Zhou Zhang’s memory, “home” is less about family than about waiting—flickering television images and idle radio noise that stretch time. What is imagined as a place of grounding here appears suspended, drifting, and fragile.
Lodged in edges and crevices, these formations may never truly point to stability; instead, they register duration, consumption, and an unfinished act of dwelling.

Between light and darkness, there is not only contrast, but also transition. At dusk, as the sun tilts westward, the light weakens, and space gradually sinks into shadow. A world once defined by clarity of form and order is slowly engulfed by ambiguity and indeterminacy.

’architecture it the masterly, correct and magnificent interplay of masses brought together in light‘——Le Corbusier’s aphorism has nearly become a catchphrase. But it was only during this trip—under the relentless midsummer sun of the Mediterranean, closely reading buildings along the way—that its meaning finally became clear to me. At its most direct, he was saying this: light is what allows pure geometric forms to reveal themselves with precision.

(Jialing River)For the whole year’s end, a fine drizzle laced with sulfuric acid drifted down. Rainwater that had arrived early and not yet evaporated still clung to the stone statue’s shoulders. One hand was held behind its back, the other slightly opened forward, as if it had witnessed those long, clamorous afternoons. Clouds of water that would not gather into a mass coiled along the spines of the distant mountains, piling up at the statue’s far-off point of vision into a screen. Across this basin where the Yangtze extends inward as an inland river, they drifted with the passing of years, each murmuring inwardly, growing sparse and desolate.

‘Each sketching or painting is, in a specific time and space, a high degree of coordination between the eyes, hands, and heart, not just ”looking at “ the world, but ”seeing“ it.’
——ZHU Tao
‘In Zhu Tao’s manuscripts, what I see is not merely scenery, but cities with different temperaments and atmospheres. One feels present within them. I can almost smell those places: Venice soaked in sunlight, rain-drenched Kyoto, the wind-blown landscapes of Qinghai beneath a blazing sun, and Greece where the air carries the salt of the sea and the wind is filled with its scent.’
—— Lí WEI

This exhibition also feels like a gentle resistance against creativity in the age of AI. Today, AI can effortlessly generate stunning artworks—imitating countless styles, producing perfect compositions and colors within seconds. It seems we no longer lack “beautiful works.” Yet AI ultimately has no life, no sensations. It cannot experience the freshness of the air after rain, cannot feel the soft brush of willow branches against one’s face, and cannot possess the singular, unrepeatable experiences that humans gather on their journeys.
Professor Zhu’s sketch manuscripts, on the contrary, are the truest reflections of how he measures the world with his footsteps, captures beauty with his senses, and records the present moment with his brush.
—Excerpt from 《The Art at The Moment》 by Jassie, MA in Museum Studies, Faculty of Arts, The University of Hong Kong

even in the darkest of times we have the right to expect some illumination, and that such illumination may well come less from theories and concepts than from the uncertain, flickering, and often weak light that some men and women, in their lives and their works, will kindle under almost all circumstances and shed over the time span that was given them on earth-this conviction is the inarticulate back ground against which these profiles were drawn.

When we arrive at the site, we can, from a rational perspective, understand how ancient Egyptian architecture—through structural techniques, spatial organization, and artistic ornamentation—embodies rich cultural meanings and profound religious significance.
Yet perhaps more important is our opportunity to personally experience the great poetics of spaces: the grandeur of the pyramids, the solemn stillness of the Sphinx, the dimness of the sun temples, and the mysterious, oppressive atmosphere created by the dappled interplay of light and shadow within the forest of colossal columns…
These poetics transcend cultural differences, temporal changes, and professional boundaries, offering us profound insights into life itself.
——Excerpt from the preface of ”Eternal-Daily LIfe: A Journey to Egyptian Classical & Modern Architecture“ by ZHU Tao

”Looking at the manuscripts in the gallery, it seems that I understand a little bit deeper meaning of this exhibition. German philosopher Martin Heidegger once used Dasein to describe his philosophy, which act as the awareness and perseverance in the present. Our existence is composed of countless ‘moments’, which we ignored and experienced with our hearts, but the truest marks of our life. Professor Zhu‘s manuscripts is an impromptu record of his travels, without preset purpose or deliberate crafting, but true perception of the scenery.
It is the rainy environment of the Miho Museum, where he hastily applied a few strokes of the view; It is the looming of gentle silhouette of the Leifeng Pagoda, through the swaying weeping willows by the West Lake; It is the moment under the huge stone pillar of Karnak Temple, his enlightenment of history and civilization. These records are just like morning dew reflecting the morning light, holding both the radiance of beauty and the most devout tribute to ’the moment‘. Beauty is its texture, and the present is its soul.“
—Excerpt from 《The Art at The Moment》 by Jassie, MA in Museum Studies, Faculty of Arts, The University of Hong Kong
