Welcome to @thecarlyestate โsomewhere between a boutique hotel and a private estate.
Over four years ago I got the call to start designing The Carly, and now itโs open for business. The project was inspired by my clientโs pandemic binge-watching of Schittโs Creek and subsequent Zillow doom scroll search term โcountry inn.โ We took the two main buildings down to the studs and rebuilt them like theyโve always been there. We pined over every material and detail, every reclaimed board, every fabric and wallpaper, every grout color, every light switch. All perfectly imperfect, itโs the cracks that let the light in.
Now there are 9 bespoke bedrooms total, all en suite. My favorite one is called The George. Itโs not the largest but itโs got the best view of the meadow. Public spaces include a living room-style lobby, complete with a fireplace and dining area, a bar, a commercial-rated chefโs kitchen, a screening room, and lots more nooks and crannies. On the property, spread across 21 acres, are a rainbow trout-stocked lake, fire pits, a napping cabin, a ping pong shed, and more. The Carly is located in Carlton, in the heart of Oregon Wine Country.

The adventure continues with my second @sunbrella fabric collection. This new collection builds on my first with 96 fabrics across 16 unique patterns.
The aim for this collection was to embody the allure of the American West, with stripes, gingham, plaid, forest scenes, and even some woodland creatures to cuddle up to.
Max x @sunbrella fabrics are available now, exclusively through @pindlercorp showrooms.

What a trip! Today our book, LODGE: An Indoorsy Tour of Americaโs National Parks, comes out. Think of it as an armchair travel guide for interior design enthusiasts. We shine a light on 10 historic national park lodges in all their airy, timeworn splendor.
I wrote LODGE with @kathrynosheaevans - who, btw, lived and worked in three national parks during her college summers before she became a fancy schmancy design and travel journalist. Pro tip: find yourself a friend who you can geek out on national park backstories with. Maybe one day youโll write a book together.
Making this book was just an excuse to hang out with my buddies, photographers @davidtsay & @robschanz . Who would have thought when we first talked about this project that one day weโd be doing donuts in a rental motorboat in the middle of Lake McDonald at Glacier National Park, waiting for the clouds to lift so we could get the final shot of the book right when the sun hit?
We wanted the book to be lodge-y but not stodgy. LA-based designers @partandparcella made it look timeless and fresh, just like the lodges themselves.
I first learned about the national parks by watching the Ken Burns documentaries on PBS, which were a combination of my two favorite things in life: the great outdoors and television. What an honor that Ken agreed to write the foreword to our book! Itโs perfect. Thank you to my fellow New Hampshirite.
This is my second book published by @gibbssmithbooks and edited by Madge Baird. Hereโs to many more!
Thank you to the @nationalparkservice and the individual lodges and concessionaire groups for the access and support. Be kind if you visit the parks. Leave only footprints.
LODGE is available whenever books are sold, but the coolest way to order a copy is through your local bookstore. If you do buy online please leave a review (they really add up).

And hereโs the cover of my Great Smoky Mountains National Park book, also coming out on 8/25 via Gibbs Smith / Simon & Schuster.
The Smokies feel different than the national parks out west, with their blue haze and tailgate party energyโฆ just in the woods. This book covers everything from mountain views and swimming holes to old cabins, popular (and not so popular) trails, and of course, Dollywood.
For this book I traveled with photographer Rob Schanz and my brother Noah, hiking, jeeping around, and trying not to become bear food.
Available for presale wherever books are sold.

Very excited to share the cover of the first book in my new national park series, Yellowstone National Park, out August 25 from Gibbs Smith / Simon & Schuster.
If Lodge was an indoorsy tour, this new project is the outdoorsy version. Itโs part travel guide, part photography collection, organized the way you actually move through the park. Think waterfalls, roadside bison sightings, and geothermal weirdness, with practical tips on where to stay and what to do, and just enough history to ground it all.
Photographer Aaron Kraft and I crisscrossed the park for this one, Aaron taking photos while I wrote, drank a lot of coffee, and chatted with the resident yellow-bellied marmots.
This week Iโll share the second book in the series, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which will be released alongside Yellowstone on 8/25.
Available for presale wherever books are sold.

Spoke with @businessofhome about why Western design is having a moment.
In the 2020s, things got really minimal and faceless,โ says Max Humphrey, the Portland, Oregonโbased designer who has built his career on incorporating an Americana-inspired aesthetic to interiors. โNow people want spaces that feel like theyโre from somewhere. Americana and Western style does that naturally because itโs so connected to history. Itโs specific, itโs regional, and clients want their homes to feel tied to a place.โ
In design, that translates to comfort and a newfound respect for imperfection. โThings that are more open, more relaxed, and a little rougher around the edges, says Humphrey. โYou want to be able to spill your coffee without freaking out.โ
Humphrey feels Western inspired ideals transcend location as well: โThe West goes beyond design. Itโs an idea as much as it is a place. Itโs part of the American psyche whether youโve spent time in the West or notโit goes back to the Gold Rush and westward expansion. The West pulls you toward it.โ
Thanks to @jenfernand for the interview.

And big congrats to my friend @elizabeth__rees , boss lady at Chasing Paper. Her love letter to wallpaper, Wall Flowers, comes out next week. Preorder it, read it, and then go hang some wallpaper.
