when I first conceived of this work, there was a lot of grief that layered the research I conducted alongside scientists working at the forefront of Arctic climatology — coming to terms with the story of the Arctic as a fragile and intimate one, flooded with loss and decay.

in contrast, what was memorable about this period of production was how much laughter we had on set, the inspiring conversations we shared along the way, and the joy that sparked as we interwove our lenses and talents to create this film.

In January 2015 I decided to film my grandparents telling their stories. Seven years later, right after losing both of them, I did the same with my parents. Having these moments on tape is beyond precious. Record your loved ones. Ask your special people to sit in front of the camera for lens tests, eternalize as many of these moments as possible, because it’s all just fleeting.

Tomorrow I am off to Poland, to present Faraway at Camerimage with my friend Aziz. We often use the term "passion project" in this field, but sometimes it hits the nail right on the head. After failing to get a grant to produce this film in 2018, we decided to shoot it anyway, winging it mostly as a 2-man crew, chasing Omar around for over 13 months.

Aziz, I am proud of everything we have created together. Our collaborations took us to the @canadiancinematographer Gala in Toronto and now to @camerimage.festival in Poland - it's still surreal. I can't wait to see where we can go next. Thank you brother, I love you. Simon, thank you for the friendship and for your talent. Ashley, thank you for encouraging us to carry on when there was no support in sight. And many thanks to this amazing team that brought a lot of passion to this project:
