So why do you see riders taking a carbohydrate gel at the start of a race before the wheels have even turned?
The answer :
Riders will often consume a carbohydrate gel just before the start of a race to rapidly increase circulating blood glucose levels, providing fast, easily available fuel for the high intensity efforts at the beginning of the race.
This helps support immediate energy demands whilst also helping to spare muscle and liver glycogen stores for later in the race when fatigue becomes more of a factor.
