I’m happy to share one of my favorite projects from last year: ☆꧁✬◦°˚°◦ Spotify Proto- Playlist ◦°˚°◦✬꧂☆ created together with the best team @studioherrstrom
STUDIO HERRSTRÖM: Erik Herrström, Alexander Raffl, Matouš Marťák, Marzena Płaszczyca, Kara Griffin Cushman, Kerstin Herrström
Spotify: Jess Huddleston, Marc Matar, Loren Lee, Shahin Haghjou, Michelle Pham
When the Canadian editorial team’s brief landed, I knew right away it was a perfect match. Their vision was clear: curated, non-algorithmic, and deeply rooted in experimental music culture. For me, it felt personal – many of the artists were already in heavy rotation on my own playlists.
Early on, one idea kept surfacing: tension. The visual world of Proto- embraces lo-fi and raw formatting, standing apart in today’s hyper-slick, high-res design. It pulls from a time when digital felt handmade – like building your very first website.
ASCII art became one of our key tools: a universal design language full of early-internet nostalgia. We explored how it could live alongside a modular, monospaced system, shaping both frames and motion.
In the end, we designed four original ASCII-inspired frames: star, heart, hexagon, and oval – later adapted by Spotify into large-format OOHs across Toronto.
Listen to Proto- on Spotify.

matousmartak.com/playground 🎨Every time a new case study goes live, it feels like a big day. But in between those shiny drops, things usually go quiet. So I thought –why not make a little Playground of updates? From time to time you can peek in and find something new: some projects made it, some never will.. but you’ll never know which is which.🤹
