Might not seem like a big deal, but for me this is such a huge moment. Josie never seemed comfortable around the ocean, ankle deep water was her limit. Today she let me take her out well beyond her usual comfort zoneto catch her first waves. And while I’m writing this post she’s still telling me about how much fun she had 😂😁 little wins. As a parent who surfs, Not gonna lie, it’s hard seeing other kids so comfortable and frothingon surfing at such young ages. It’s all you want, but at the same time you don’t want to scare them off. The most important thing is that they have a smile on their face whatever they choose to be doing.

There’s many people I meet at the Market’s selling my books @saltymindstasmania that have never surfed before. The most common question they ask me, “what’s it like riding inside of a barrel?”
This is probably the closest example I can give! How have you tried to explain the feeling to someone who has never even caught a wave?

WARNING. Maybe not for squirmish viewers. Nothing crazy but some people just don’t like this kind of thing. Had a cyst in my ankle for the last year, pressing on a nerve which caused lots of pain and also loss of feeling through out my foot at times. Finally did something about it last week, had it aspirated and a cortisone injection. Fingers crossed it won’t come back. Interesting to see the viscosity of the fluid that was removed.

A wild moment from Shipstern Bluff October 2011. This day was cooking for towing. Mega low tide and 15ft+ sets. Wind was a bit devilish causing some mean chandeliers to deal with. @sandy_ryan whipped me into this piece of ocean a little wider than I would have liked and had to fade straight in over the step (only the second time he had whipped anyone in). Once you commit to these ones it turns into full survival mode. Everything slows up, but your brain is on auto pilot. Every move you make is critical, but you always seem to make the right choice. You’re usually dealing with one step at shippies, but this dished out 3. As I pulled under the lip, the barrel just turned into a full white out and it felt like I was snowboarding through this giant cave. I held on as long as I could before getting swallowed and a pretty hefty beat down followed. Watching this and reliving the moment actually gets me pretty keen to get behind the rope again one day 🤷‍♂️🙏
