@thekeeferbar ❤️🍸 Story time:

(The following reflections were spurred by a well deserved award that was given to @thekeeferbar last week. The @50bestbars ranked them 7th in North America, and 1st in all of Canada 🥳🥂)

Back in the fall 2017, I started performing at The Keefer Bar on Wednesday nights. I had heard the lore of this spot before ever setting foot inside. My curiosity was tickled. I remember my friend @bennywisemusic gushing about seeing the great @alexmahermusic at the Keefer and what a vibe it was. Just a few years later, it was Alex who recommended I perform there! Wild!

In my first few gigs there, it quickly became clear to me why this place was as highly regarded as it was. It was a vibe indeed. The standard for service was high and even during the most intense nights, the entire staff would perform at such a high level. They treated each other as family and I bonded with them fast. After feeling stagnant in regard to "bar gigs" , it gave me some fresh energy to show up every week to contribute what I could to the atmosphere they'd created.

Often cocktail bars that garner such high praise feel reserved for "high rollers" or would carry certain pretensions. With the Keefer, this was never the case. The crowd varies so wildly. Business crowd, first dates, hockey fans, late night cap, industry folks, and on it goes. They have a unique gift to make everyone feel welcome. To make anyone who comes in the door feel like they were somewhere very cool...and without trying hard to do so.

During COVID, the only place I was allowed to perform outside of my bedroom was @thekeeferyard ; a space created outside the Keefer Bar born out of strict regulations of where we could and couldn't convene. At a time when the bar's very existence was in jeopardy, the team created a space for performers and DJ's to do their thing in the midst of a time of serious isolation and uncertainty. It became an oasis of community and a grounding force in my life when social connection, especially in person, was at an all time low. Post COVID, I came back to perform inside the Keefer with a renewed appreciation for the space we had back.... continued in comments!!

Hello everyone!!

Been on the road a ton lately and in the middle of a move, but I'd just like to thank everyone who's come out to my recent shows in Kelowna, Denver and Reno with @lazysyruporchestra , and @envisionfestival both solo and with Lazy.

Next big one is with @lazysyruporchestra at the @commodoreballroom on April 25th! Tickets are moving fast! So get them before they're gone!

Also...a thank you and a ramble:

Thank you to all of you who come out and support not only myself but local musicians and artists! In Vancouver over the years, I've seen venues, artist spaces, studios, etc. struggle/not be able to afford lease rates/rent in order to build community, push culture forward, and also just make our city much less boring! When you buy tickets to a gallery showing, a dance performance, your kids friends punk band, etc....it places value on this type of art and community and gives it support. In other cities around the world, I've noticed this type of community is much more embedded into the culture naturally. A much more deliberate effort is required in Vancouver to make this a reality due to high rents, red tape, archaic liquor laws, etc.

A massive thank you to the business owners, developers, and people in high places who do invest in artists and in providing spaces for them to flourish and grow. If I did not have these spaces growing up and beyond, I would not be who I am today.

I've seen positive changes in this realm in the last couple of years especially, but there is still lots to be done. Advocates are needed! Even if it's just as simple as buying a ticket to something or showing up and dancing. Let's keep the momentum rolling! Love you all ❤️
