Love that new paddle feeling! My newest paddle of choice is the Holbrook Arma T (carbon face) and it’s been such a fun paddle to play with because of its extreme pop and power.

It always is acknowledged by a slight head nod. During this COVID-19 pandemic, I have had the distinct pleasure to form a #quaranteam with @binechuks, @mikespice, and @mcstrongside. The four of us have pushed each other mentally and physically beyond our perceived limits. That said, nearly three weeks ago, I called out a consistency I noticed amongst black men - the head nod. I probed Chuks and Mike, and they laughed it off and stated it’s just a thing between black men, but didn’t go in-depth. At that moment, I didn’t understand the magnitude and extent of my inquiry.

Flashback to just before midnight of April 9, 2001: My dad was midway through his 33-year law enforcement career. My mother was sobbing, so much so that my brothers and I woke up to make sense of the midnight tears. It turned out Cincinnati was rioting, and my dad was in the middle of it. There was a call over the radio that someone fitting my dad’s description was shot at. I recall balling up and crying over the potential of never seeing my father again. My father, a kind and just man who, irrespective of race, can parse through and see the objective truth to be a fair enforcer of the law, could be forever lost. That is just a taste of what black people face. Every. Single. Day. My father was shot at multiple times, but, fortunately, was okay.

I am privileged not to know the terror, but rather, the love of law enforcement. I am privileged to be confident to be able to walk free of the fear that plagues millions of black men and women each day. I am privileged.
That head nod? Yeah, it’s an acknowledgment between black men in America of the battle through the muck, blood, sweat, and tears to garner just a taste of the life I take for granted each day. From education, health, food, to security, I will never understand what the head nod truly means, but I see you. I hear you. I stand by you. #blacklivesmatter #standwithyou #bethechange

🇺🇸🇮🇷🇵🇹🇬🇧 These four flags represent the nationalities us five. If you’d indulge me, I have a message to my national and international friends. We are dancing the night away in Goa at the club called Tito’s. The five of us spent several days together and I wish it could have been months. The lives @brise_f (@nasim_yoga 🇮🇷), @shailen.10 (🇬🇧), @isabelmtramos (🇵🇹), and @jovij26 (🇺🇸) lead are beyond amazing. I must learn from their abilities to live life one day at a time.
In light of the recent events in Iran, the world is attempting to grapple with what will come next. What are the implications of a such a play?
For the Americans, I want to highlight my time with the Persian (Iranian), Nasim (@brise_f). She is a warm, passionate, peaceful and gorgeous woman on a mission to make the world a better place. She is an amazing yoga professional and even better person. The media would have us believe Iran is a place of great peril and our enemy. Nasim proves that completely wrong. It was heartbreaking for her to tell me how the this week’s events made her afraid for her own safety.
For the non-Americans, please know that the action taken this week was at the decision of a few and, unfortunately, must be carried out by the many. Our military service members are some of the best individuals I have gotten to know and their sacrifices are unparalleled.
In a time of immense technology, it is important to voice the positive energy of Nasim and all my non-American friends. Whatever is to come, in the days, months and years ahead, I do not want the reality of my beautiful interactions to be tainted or morphed by a machine driven to spew fear.
Thank you to all photographed for accepting me as a friend and our US service members for your sacrifices. I want to highlight those @usarmy Paratroopers previously stationed @fortbraggnc and now in harms way. Further, I want Americans to be able to see a different side to a seemingly perpetual nefarious country.
