Let’s restore the feeling! My first love was music, and that’s why I got into photography. A lot of my influences stem from there. I just remember being so excited for album covers and new XXL shoots to drop. I’m a student of the game first, so it’s always respect to the ones that came before me. When I got asked to do this shoot, I instantly went into storytelling mode thinking about how I could connect the past generation to a future generation thats separated by more than 20 years. Rap influence through attitude that translates onto the court and the field was the common thread that kept coming up for me, and that took me on a journey of exploring my own influences from ’96 through 2000, and how that could translate aesthetically into more than just a recreation photo.

Justin Jefferson (b. 1999) and Anthony Edwards (b. 2001) had only been on Earth for a few years by the time Hiphop’s most iconic director, Hype Williams released his debut film, Belly in 1998. It featured one of the most iconic intro scenes ever as the duo of Nas and DMX entered a club under black light that transformed their skin into the most beautiful shade of blue. Eyes glowing, they looked like wolves stalking their prey. Concurrently, in Minnesota, there were two guys making their own iconic intros in their respective sports; Kevin Garnett and Randy Moss. Poetically more than 20 years later, were witnessing a re-interpretation of the past through Justin and Anthony. It’s the same but different. Two separate eras impacted by the same cultural influences.

These were test shots for a World Cup campaign that I shot. Ended up just loving how this looked even on the green screen which was supposed to be cut out in post. One of the rare moments the test ends up being a banger.

Ok, saying this as humbly as possible but I've had a few people reach out wanting to talk shop and ask questions, get advice, etc. so I thought it could be cool if we did one big pull up.

I just remember what it was like 10+ years ago when we had more photo publications, interviews, etc talking about the business and just overall a bit more community where we didn't feel so alone. In trying to bring a bit of that energy back, I'm hoping that even some of my more experienced friends will also show up to this and add to the conversation.

Going out on a limb here, and asking if any of you guys can get me connected to @kingofbingo or @theauthenticdelroylindo. Two men I would love to shoot!

Did this portrait session with jazz legend, Roscoe Mitchell, for @nytmag back during the pandemic. Roscoe was immune compromised and only agreed to do the shoot if there was a way to not being in contact with a person. So I drove to his house, climbed a ladder outside of his window and did the whole session that way. I think it turned out even better this way plus I got a cool story from it.

Anyway, if you have a way to connect this for me it would be much appreciated!

It’s been 10 yrs now of photographing Lebron for various things and it always involved basketball, so it was cool to do something different that was lighthearted. I’ve also worked with some amazing golfers on shoots, and trusting them I have definitely put myself in the line of fire. So the first thing I did when I saw Bron is showed him this video (last slide) of @dustinjohnsongolf hitting a ball over my head. “I said this is what we’re NOT doing today!” 🤣
