I moved into my studio at the height of the pandemic. I would go weeks without seeing a single person. Although I was ok in my solitude, I found myself connecting to this lonely palm tree in the middle of the 10 freeway. I’m not sure if I was losing my mind, but that tree was my companion amidst the chaos of the times.
When @stillbrazy reached out to me and sent me several original photos, this one in particular really stood out to me. Something about a man bonding with his best friend made me think about that tree. My goal with this painting is to have my viewer look past the tattoos and the cracked gravel, and empathize with a man, his best friend, and the strength of this tree.

In 2020, when the world felt like it was unraveling, LA-based artist Eric Mancha bought a one-way ticket to Oaxaca, drawn by its rich Indigenous culture. Welcomed into the community, he learned quickly—“you gotta respect the mezcal.”
Inspired by those encounters (and a few sips of mezcal), Mancha created a painting in Oaxaca that blends Chicano and contemporary American influences with a deep respect for tradition.
Back in LA, his journey led him to his favorite mezcalería, where he discovered Agua del Sol—a small, traditional label that resonated deeply.
Five years later, that spark has become reality: a collaboration between Agua del Sol and Eric Mancha, uniting two projects born during the pandemic.
