Hainan Science Museum: One Spiral, Two Journeys, Three Cores
At the heart of Hainan Science Museum, is a single spiraling route that connects every gallery in the museum, walkable in either direction. The entire spiral is carried by three concrete core tubes. They eliminate columns from the exhibition floors and lift the ring-shaped volume above an open ground level, allowing the building to float over its reflecting pools and the canopy beneath it.
It is, in some ways, the question Ma Yansong has been circling for two decades: how does a building stop being a container for content and start being the content itself? The Hainan Science Museum may be his clearest answer yet.

Ma Yansong Builds a Science Museum that Floats
In Haikou, MAD‘s founder creates a museum without columns that connects all galleries with one single spiral .
The Hainan Science Museum, designed by @mayansong_mad and his firm MAD, has opened to the public on the edge of Wuyuan River National Wetland Park. Since its trial opening, it has welcomed more than 350,000 visitors in four months, with peak days drawing more than 5,800 people.
Rather than organizing science into fixed, segmented halls, the museum turns circulation into part of the learning experience. A continuous spiral ramp connects the galleries, allowing visitors to move through themes of ocean, deep space, rainforest, geology, local ecology, and everyday science.

We’re at Quzhou Stadium.
It’s raining, yet walking into this fairy-tale-like venue with an umbrella in hand feels incredibly soothing. The second and the third picture displays the closing story I wrote for the second episode of @domusweb , detailing how the design concept for Quzhou took shape and came to life.

Architecture is Feeling Nature.
The Feburary issue of @domusweb 2026, guest edited by Ma Yansong @mayansong_mad , continue the ongoing inquiry under the theme “Architecture is not architecture.”
This issue reflects on a kind of nature that exists within inner life and everyday experience. As it is sensed through perception, it shapes how people understand their emotions and their surroundings.
From buildings shaped by climate and landscape to works responding to light, humidity, growth, and decay, this issue brings people back into contact with the conditions they live within.

Architecture is Fantasy.
The January 2026 issue of @domusweb , guest edited by Ma Yansong @mayansong_mad , begins the year’s theme Architecture is Not Architecture.
Positioned as a manifesto, the issue approaches imagination not as escape, but to construct reality under present conditions.Across projects and contexts, the issue examines how imagination is translated into built reality.

MAD On Site: Anji Culture and Art Center, Zhejiang
Breathing beneath the leaves roof.
The Anji Culture and Art Center is taking shape between the city, river, mountains, and tea fields. Designed as an open cultural landscape, the project brings six public venues together under a series of overlapping roofs inspired by scattered bamboo leaves.
A recent visit with the team offered a closer view of the project in progress, from the building’s full scale to the atmosphere beneath its giant roof.
Anji Culture and Art Center will soon be completed. Stay tuned.

MAD On Site: Jiaxing Train Station, Jiaxing
A station beneath the landscape
Two years after completion, the project reappears in an unexpected way. On the way to the site visit in Jiaxing, the journey inevitably passes through the station itself.
Rail travel remains a central part of intercity movement in China. Passing through a space we designed, now in constant use, brings a more direct reading of how it operates day to day. The experience unfolds step by step, from the shaded surface above to the tunnels below, and out onto the platforms where trains arrive and depart.
Seeing the project maintained with such care, still close to its original state, gives a sense of continuity between design and use.

Set by South Lake, the civic center brings exhibition, education, and public life together under one roof. The structure frames a central lawn while holding the three venues as a single form.
