Today, we bring you LEENALCHI.

Writing a caption for a band that is this dynamic and otherworldly is no small thing.

There’s so much to say, it’s hard to know where to start.

What if we tell you they’re a Korean band who play intensely addictive psych pop? What if we tell you their songs sound like animals talking to each other over tripped out bass lines?

Leenalchi’s songs are based on pansori, a traditional style of storytelling that’s been around since the Joseon Dynasty (17th century).

They have a new single out today called “Here Comes That Crow.” Based on the tale about the Chinese warlord Cao Cao, the song is an allegory about life’s precariousness.

The singer Ahn Yi Ho wrote a poem for you as you interpret the song’s meaning for yourself:

도용도용은 작은 배가 물위를 떠가는 모양을 그린 말이다. 조조도 조자룡도 쫓기는 자도 쫓는 자도 멈출수는 없다. 판자때기 아래가 저승인데 어느 누가 멈춰 설 수 있겠는가!

Doyung doyung goes the small boat seen floating down the river. Whether the chased or the chaser, no one can stop—just beneath the boards lies the underworld!

Five years ago today ✨

Someone once told us that when Floating Points’ Promises came out, it felt like the world stopped.

A lot of big things were said about this album. But for us, the most powerful writing has always come from listeners, the people who made this album their own. We loved finding your personal stories in YouTube comments, Bandcamp messages, Reddit threads.

We worked on this for years, and by the time it came out, it was the second year of the pandemic. Now it holds new meaning for us as Pharoah’s last album.

We’ve been listening to Promises again in the lead up to this anniversary. The world has changed, but it seems our need for moments of reflection is even greater than before. If you can, take some time to revisit the album as one long piece — as Floating Points (Sam Shepherd) hoped you would.

Rest in peace Pharoah, we are always missing you. Love to you and your family. And love to Sam, his crew in London Tom & Jess, our friends at the London Symphony Orchestra, Evan aka Baby Low, Pauli, and everyone who worked with us on this masterpiece through the years.

Meshela Lee is an angel at the end of America.

After what could have been a deadly car accident, her life was spared. She met otherworldly figures, she saw the pearly gates — and now she does God’s work with fury.

Dressed only in purple, she sings on the streets, wielding a guiro and belting over g-funk beats ripped from the internet.

Local shopkeepers complain about the noise. She doesn’t care. It’s her ministry.
