Lt. Governor Ghazala Hashmi
Virginia’s 43rd Lieutenant Governor. Former Virginia State Senator for the 15th District.

Today, I was incredibly honored to take my Oath of Office as the 43rd Lieutenant Governor of Virginia. I look forward to working alongside our Governor and administration to build a Commonwealth focused on affordability, opportunity, dignity, and justice.

On Memorial Day, we pause to remember and honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten, and we remain forever grateful for their courage and dedication.

As someone who grew up in Georgia and cherishes memories of Statesboro and Atlanta, I am proud to share my latest op-ed published today in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Whether you call Georgia or Virginia home, the values of safety, inclusion, and opportunity should unite us all. At a time when division and fear too often dominate our politics, these conversations matter more than ever.

Thank you to Senators Warner and Kaine for hosting their AANHPI Commonwealth Coffee this morning in DC. The reception brought together leaders, community members, and elected officials from throughout Virginia to celebrate the heritage and contributions of our diverse communities that continue to enrich our Commonwealth.

It was a pleasure to give the keynote address at the Virginia Transit Association Awards Luncheon and Virginia Transit Leadership Institute Graduation Ceremony. We celebrated the achievements of Virginia’s 40+ transit agencies and honored 15 VTLI fellows for their successful completion of rigorous nine-month leadership. Reliable transit services foster sustainable urban growth and economic development so Virginia’s families can continue to thrive.

I am heartbroken by the horrific act of violence at the Islamic Center of San Diego, which took the lives of three innocent people, including Amin Abdullah, a father of eight whose courage helped protect nearly 200 children inside the mosque’s school. Even in the face of unimaginable danger, he acted to protect his community.
As we mourn the victims and pray for their families and the broader San Diego community, we must also reject bigotry and mass violence targeting communities based on faith or ethnicity. Every American deserves to live and worship in safety and peace, and we all share a responsibility to reject bigotry and political violence in all forms.

This Jewish American Heritage Month, we celebrate the countless contributions Jewish Americans have made to our nation’s artistic, intellectual, cultural, and civic life. From groundbreaking scholarship and scientific discovery to music, literature, public service, and the arts, Jewish Americans have helped shape and enrich our communities in profound ways. This month, we honor those achievements and the enduring impact of Jewish Americans on the story of our Commonwealth and our country.

On the Virginia National Guard’s 419th birthday, we honor the oldest continuously serving military organization in the nation and the generations of service members who have answered the call to serve our Commonwealth and country. For more than four centuries, the Virginia National Guard has demonstrated courage, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to protecting our communities. Thank you to all who have served and continue to serve.

I was honored to join leaders, advocates, and changemakers from across the country at the 2026 APAICS Legislative Leadership Summit and Annual Awards Gala. It was wonderful to speak alongside Maryland Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller during the summit about leadership, public service, and the importance of building more inclusive pathways into government. Receiving the Pioneer Award at the gala was deeply meaningful and a reminder of the communities, mentors, and advocates who continue working every day to expand opportunity and representation. Thank you to APAICS for its leadership in uplifting AAPI voices and helping tell a fuller American story. #AANHPIHM #APAICSLeads

It was an honor to join YWCA Richmond for the 46th Outstanding Women Awards and celebrate so many incredible women whose leadership and service are making a real difference in our communities. I always leave these spaces feeling inspired by the strength, compassion, and determination of the women working every day to create opportunity for others. Congratulations to all of this year’s honorees, and thank you to YWCA Richmond for continuing to champion women and girls across our Commonwealth.

Today’s paid family and medical leave bill signing was a powerful step forward for working families across Virginia. During my time in the Senate, I proudly co-patroned paid family and medical leave because no one should have to choose between their paycheck and caring for a new child, a loved one, or themselves in a moment of need.
With this legislation, Virginia is set to become the first Southern state to create a paid family and medical leave program, a historic milestone for workers and families across the Commonwealth. Congratulations to Senator Boysko and Delegate Sewell for leading this effort, and thank you to Governor Spanberger for standing with Virginia families and signing this important bill into law.

This Mother’s Day, we honor the strength, devotion, and resilience of mothers across Virginia. We also recognize the very real pressures so many are facing right now.
For too many moms, the maternal health systems can be hard to navigate, access, and uneven. Rising costs are stretching family budgets, childcare is too often out of reach, and mothers are carrying the weight of innumerable economic pressures.
That is why this year’s legislative progress matters. From protecting the right to contraception to signing the Momnibus bills, we are taking concrete steps to strengthen maternal healthcare, address disparities, expand access, and better support mothers, babies, and families.
These wins are a reminder that policy can make a real difference. But the work is far from over.
Today we celebrate mothers and recommit to the work of supporting, protecting, and valuing moms and their families.
