LIVE PROJECT UPDATE 👷‍♂️✨

Status: In Construction
Location: Theobalds Road, Holborn, London

We’re excited to share a progress update on Mercury. A transformative workspace we’re proud to be delivering on Theobalds Road.

At the heart of the scheme is a strong commitment to sustainability, retaining 90% of the existing structural frame and much of the original façade, while carefully removing later additions to restore the building’s original character. It’s a great example of how engineering can support circular design principles in practice.

Inside, the structure has been reimagined to unlock flexibility, connectivity, and natural light. A striking basement auditorium will form the centre piece of the main atrium, helping to create a dynamic, adaptable facility that can evolve with occupier needs. Enhanced and extended floor plates and smart structural solutions are enabling open, flexible layouts across all levels an options for inter-connectivity.

Beyond the workspace, the building will offer a full ecosystem of amenities. From a rooftop pavilion and terrace to a sunken courtyard, gym, and landscaped public areas. All designed to enhance the everyday experience and well being of the future tenants.

We’re proud to be part of a project that not only respects its past but is engineered for the future.

Pushing boundaries by bringing two eras of construction together — a 1950s precast structure and a 1990s in-situ concrete extension 🏗️✨

Our brief:
🔧 Connect the systems
🔧 Open up the floor plates
🔧 Add low-carbon, lightweight, fully demountable new floors
🔧 Build in long-term flexibility for future workspace needs

By tying the structures together and closing movement joints, we were able to remove major core walls and unlock open, adaptable floor space.
We designed new floor areas that are:

🌿 Low carbon
🪶 Lightweight
🔩 Manually handleable & lift-friendly

🔁 Removable and reinstallable while the building stays operational
A project that shows how smart engineering can extend a building’s life, maximise usable area, and keep workspace relevant for generations.

✨ Festive season done the London Structures Lab way ✨

From getting hands-on (and a little messy) at a pottery class, to a proper Christmas lunch at a local South London pub. The celebrations were in full swing.

We headed back to the office for games, great vibes and somedelicious cocktail making before rounding off the day with one final pub stop (because… of course).

Our latest thought piece, "Why Carbon Calculations Fail to Reflect the Realities of Urban Environments" is now live.

Long-term value in the built environment comes from balancing carbon with quality, usability, productivity, aesthetics, and durability — creating buildings that are not just low-carbon, but adaptable, resilient, and future-ready.

Carbon invested in our built environment must be productive and it must remain relevant for future generations. From retrofit vs. new build decisions, to flexibility, disassembly, and regenerative materials, we argue for a more holistic approach — one that ensures our cities remain attractive, sustainable, and meaningful for years to come.
