I still remember countless nights I spent in Itaewon. It aches my heart to see streets usually filled with lights, laughter and vibrant energy turn into a site of tragedy. I am holding everyone affected by this tragedy in my heart 🕯️
This is the picture of my family on the last day of my grandma’s funeral.
It’s been two weeks since she passed away.
Born in the 1930’s my grandmother witnessed almost 90 years of history unfold in front of her. She lived through the Japanese occupation, the Korean War, and various Korean military dictatorships, all of which ended before I was born. I remember listening to vivid historic accounts from her, often accompanying teachings and wisdom.Of all topics covered by my grandma, one persistent teaching still echoes in me to ache my heart “you have to eat well to be healthy”. I will dearly miss hearing her say, against my firm disbelief, that I am getting too thin — I wonder if there is anyone who will say this to me since the last time I heard it from her 15 days ago. Her bravery and love allowed her to run a family of 8 people in the past, overcome tragedies and live through thick and thin by her family. Her unparalleled bravery and love will be succeeded by her 4 children, 8 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren to come. I will always remember your gentle, silk-smooth hand rubs. Grandma, I cannot thank you enough for everything. I love you.
May she rest in peace.

Hidden Stream - Wollak Mountain : Korea is notoriously mountainous. Forests taking up around 65 percent of the country, huge parts of its land are still inaccessible and hidden. Heavily industrialised, cites in Korea seem almost ignorant about its biodiversity. Being lost in the mountain range evokes a sense of irony - one that resembles being lost in a city, just more disconnected.
